Nine Perfect Strangers Review: Hulu’s Spa Retreat Is a Campy, Confused Mess

Grade CIt’s always amusing when two TV shows pop up at the same time with the same basic concept… but the differences can also be instructive. After The White Lotus premiered just last month on HBO, now Hulu’s new drama Nine Perfect Strangers also follows a crew of mismatched strangers as they get more than they bargained for on an idyllic resort getaway. But while The White Lotus explores this concept with subtle, character-based humor, Nine Perfect Strangers — premiering Wednesday, Aug. 18; I’ve seen the first four episodes — opts for a clumpy mix of broad comedy, soppy drama and psychological horror that borders on campy. If The White Lotus is 30 Rock, then Nine Perfect Strangers is Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: not “good,” exactly, and definitely way overblown, but still watchable in its own strange way.

It has a stellar pedigree, to be sure, coming from Big Little Liars book author Liane Moriarty, showrunner David E. Kelley and star Nicole Kidman. (It even has moody, evocative opening credits, just like BLL.) Plus, it’s assembled an all-star cast, including Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, Regina Hall and Bobby Cannavale — any one of whom would make a TV show worth watching. But as talented as these actors are, the material they’re given here is flimsy and threadbare. It’s an awkward blend of personalities and tones that never meshes together; the actors seem to be acting on two or three different shows, at least.

Nine Perfect Strangers Hulu Regina HallThe story centers on a group of unsuspecting guests who arrive at a luxurious New Age retreat called Tranquillum that’s tucked away in the California woods. They’re all here to heal different emotional wounds — though most of them struggle to leave their phones behind — and they mostly start out hopeful and open to the resort’s odd quirks. (There’s a fine line between Zen-like serenity and cultish obedience, and Tranquillum walks right up to the edge of that line.) Before long, though, the guests descend into hostile bickering and paranoia, which isn’t very Zen of them. There’s a creeping sense of dread here, too: Why do they need to draw so much blood from the guests? And what’s in those smoothies, anyway?

Then we meet Masha, the mysterious Russian guru who runs the resort and is played by Kidman in what has to be one of the strangest TV performances of the year. Masha is an ethereal blonde wisp with a decidedly confrontational approach to therapy and an accent that’s all over the map — from Moscow to Sydney and back again, sometimes within the same sentence. Her tough-love therapy tactics are borderline comical, and I found myself wishing the show would just tip over into full-blown, ridiculous camp during her scenes. (Kidman is clearly up for it!) But then we, along with the Tranquillum guests, are also served up lots of self-improvement clichés that are oddly taken at face value, leading to corny, unearned epiphanies. Nine Perfect Strangers seems to want to skewer but also honor the New Age lifestyle at the same time, and neither approach fully lands.

Nine Perfect Strangers Hulu Melissa McCarthyIt’s a pleasure just to see so many good actors on screen — The Good Place‘s Manny Jacinto plays a Buddhist monk! He is Jianyu after all! — but it’s frustrating to watch their efforts be wasted. McCarthy plays Frances, a self-loathing romance novelist on the skids and prone to outbursts, and she soaks up a lot of screen time, but the character never quite comes into focus. Shannon is appealingly goofy as “chronically loquacious” dad Napoleon, Hall hints at years of bottled-up rage as frazzled mom Carmel, and Cannavale does his usual foulmouthed hothead act as Tony. But the characters are too thinly drawn to connect with, and there are too many of them running around here to dig too deeply into any one of them.

Of all the different shows Nine Perfect Strangers is, I most wanted to watch the one where a deranged Nicole Kidman runs a health spa with nefarious intentions. But alas, that show is crammed in here along with several others that don’t work nearly as well — or at least aren’t nearly as fun. Kelley and Moriarty lampooned rich people’s problems so precisely in Big Little Lies, it’s a little surprising to watch them stumble so badly here. But they do. The White Lotus is already in talks to return for a second season, and that’s good news indeed. But I think I’ll be cutting my stay with Nine Perfect Strangers short.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Despite a great cast and some fun elements, Nine Prefect Strangers is a messy mix of comedy, drama, horror and camp.

Heels Review: Stephen Amell’s Starz Drama Is Friday Night Lights With Wrestling — and So, So Good

At the height of my wrestling and boy band obsession, I wrote a crossover fan fic in which *NSYNC’s Justin Timberlake dated a WWE wrestler who was best friends with the Hardy Boyz and Lita. It was not good.

On the other hand, Starz’s upcoming drama Heels (premiering Sunday, Aug. 15 at 9/8c; I’ve seen the first seven episodes) — created by fellow wrestling fan Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and executive-produced by Mike O’Malley (Survivor’s Remorse) — is very good.

Much like NBC’s beloved Friday Night Lights, which captivated football fans and non-fans alike, wrestling knowledge isn’t a prerequisite to understand or even enjoy Heels. The show is a compelling family drama about two brothers just trying to keep the family business — the Duffy Wrestling League — afloat while navigating a strained relationship in the wake of their father’s death. Because of its wrestling setting, industry terms are sprinkled throughout but quickly explained, and the audience is never left in the dark about what any of those strange phrases (i.e., kayfabe) mean.

Arrow‘s Stephen Amell leads the cast as Jack Spade, a loving father and husband who takes up the role of the heel, or villain, in front of the DWL’s live crowds. Amell, of course, slides into the role naturally — his previous wrestling experience comes in handy here — and he really shines in the show’s stunning in-ring segments.

Starz Heels Season 1Meanwhile, Jack’s younger brother Ace Spade (Vikings’ Alexander Ludwig) is the face, or good guy, despite his drunken, messy behind-the-scenes antics. You’d never tell that Ludwig never wrestled before; he oozes charisma and natural athleticism as the cavalier small-town star with big league dreams. Amell and Ludwig trained with legendary wrestler Chavo Guerrero Jr. (stunt coordinator for Netflix’s GLOW and NBC’s Young Rock) along with local indie wrestlers, and it’s fun to see them in action throughout the series.

Heels is a beautifully shot and well-written love letter to independent wrestling, elevated by an ultra-talented acting ensemble. Chris Bauer (True Blood, The Deuce) is a scene stealer as “Wild Bill” Hancock, a flamboyant Ric Flair/Jake “The Snake” Roberts type who’s grappling with the unsettling reality that his best wrestling days are far behind him. Shoutout to costume designer Laura Cunningham Bauer for dressing Bauer in flashy matching suits, like a bright snakeskin ensemble you’ll wish you had in your closet.

Plus, Alison Luff is a refreshing presence as Jack’s supportive but assertive wife Staci Spade; Mary McCormack is funny and sardonic as Jack’s business partner Willie; O’Malley is a fun rival as Gully, the hedonistic head of the DWL’s big league rival promotion Florida Wrestling Dystopia; and Kelli Berglund is an unsung hero as Crystal, Ace’s valet and an aspiring wrestler with a brilliant creative mind. I’m ashamed to admit that it took me a whole five minutes to recognize real-life wrestler CM Punk, who is unforgettable in his brief appearance as local wrestling legend Ricky Rabies. (Bonnie Somerville is also a delight as Ricky’s valet Vicky Rabies!)

Some of my favorite scenes are with Robby Ramos, Allen Maldonado and James Harrison, who are criminally underused as in-ring vets Diego, Rooster and Apocalypse. They offer a glimpse at the locker room camaraderie that exists within the wrestling world, and in their limited screen time, appear to be way more interesting and complex personalities than the show lets on. One of the more frustrating aspects of the show is the way in which it handles these BIPOC characters, particularly Rooster and how his valid concerns about how Jack books him for matches are continually brushed off. Rooster is portrayed as arrogant and “making it about race,” despite all signs pointing to some form of unconscious bias. The show squanders a big opportunity to have a nuanced conversation about this pressing issue within the wrestling community and instead focuses on making Jack seem like the good guy in that scenario.

Starz Heels Season 1With that said, Heels is an entertaining and worthwhile watch for wrestling fans and non-wrestling fans alike. While the show’s in-ring segments are pretty cool, the show’s biggest sell is the prickly but tight-knit relationship between the Spade brothers, who have very different dreams but remain entwined because of the family business.

Fair warning to wrestling fans: Waldron does take some artistic liberties with his in-ring segments, especially with a big twist you’ll see later in the season, which makes for great drama even if it isn’t completely accurate, and those who are used to seeing their favorites defy gravity with mind-blowing aerial assaults may be disappointed with the more simplistic moves offered in the series. Still, the show gets to the heart of wrestling in all of its backbreaking glory while delivering a classic sibling rivalry that serves as the show’s beating heart.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Heels is an engrossing wrestling drama backed by complex characters, dysfunctional family dynamics and universal appeal.
