Gotham Knights TV show on The CW: canceled or renewed for season 2?

The battle for Batman’s city is nearly over. The CW has cancelled Gotham Knights, so it won’t be back for a second season. The first season of 13 episodes will finish airing on June 27th.

A DC superhero series, the Gotham Knights TV show stars Oscar Morgan, Olivia Rose Keegan, Navia Robinson, Fallon Smythe, Tyler DiChiara, Anna Lore, Rahart Adams, and Misha Collins. In the story, Batman is dead, and a powder keg has ignited Gotham City without the Dark Knight to protect it. In the wake of Bruce Wayne’s murder, his adopted son, Turner Hayes (Morgan), is framed for the killing, along with the children of some of the Caped Crusader’s enemies. They include skilled thief Duela Doe (Keegan), aka The Joker’s Daughter; streetwise engineer Harper Row (Smythe); and her brother, clever transgender teen Cullen Row (DiChiara). With District Attorney Harvey Dent (Collins) and the GCPD hot on their trail, Turner relies on allies, including coder Stephanie Brown (Lore), and unlikely Batman sidekick Carrie Kelley (Robinson).

Airing on Tuesday nights, the first season of Gotham Knights averages a 0.08 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 416,000 viewers. It’s a middle-of-the-road performer for the network. In the live+7 day ratings, episodes pick up about 70% more viewers.

Today, The CW renewed All American: Homecoming for a third season and Superman & Lois for a fourth season, leaving the latter as the last remaining DC superhero series on the network. Both will have fewer episodes than before as the network’s new owners cut costs. Management is moving away from airing original scripted series and is working to reduce expenses by airing acquired scripted shows and low-cost reality programming.

What do you think? Have you enjoyed watching the Gotham Knights TV series? Are you disappointed the show’s been cancelled instead of renewed for a second season?

‘Wednesday’ Cast Tease Additional Addams Family Member Joining In Season 2 — Tudum

The cast of Wednesday made a video appearance at Netflix’s Tudum global fan event in São Paulo, Brazil, and teased that a new Addams family member was joining in Season 2.

Jenna Ortega (Wednesday Addams), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair) and Hunter Doohan (Tyler Galpin) dispelled fan theories and one of them was around speculation there would be a new member of the Addams family showing up.

The cast confirmed the news that viewers would get to see more of Wednesday’s family but did not reveal who it would be. Ortega said she “would love to see Cousin Itt” while the other cast members said they wanted to see Grandma Addams.

Another fan theory that the cast tackled was Gwendoline Christie’s Professor Weems who was seemingly left for dead at the end of the first season. Ortega points out that viewers “never see her funeral” which gives way to speculation she could still be alive. Fans have pointed out that at the end of the season, Lurch has seemingly a different eye color than when viewers first met him, with some speculating it could be Weems, who is a shapeshifter.

As for teasing Season 2, the cast was limited as to what they could say. Myers opened up by saying that “Wednesday Season 2 is being worked on right now and the storyline is so top secret even we don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Watch the Wednesday cast address more fan theories in the video posted above.

Billions TV show on Showtime: ending or cancelled, no season 8

Showtime has confirmed that Billions won’t see an eighth season. The cable channel has announced a summer premiere date for the upcoming seventh season and acknowledged that those would be the final 12 episodes of the series.

Starring Paul Giamatti, Corey Stoll, Maggie Siff, David Costabile, Asia Kate Dillon, Condola Rashad, Jeffrey DeMunn, and Daniel Breaker, the series follows the world of high finance in NYC. The show’s story initially focused on hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) and his nemesis, United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Giamatti). Lewis left the show after five seasons, but it’s been revealed that he will return for half of the upcoming season.

Showtime has revealed additional details in a press release:

SHOWTIME has announced that the acclaimed drama series BILLIONS will return for its seventh and final season streaming on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME on Friday, August 11 before making its on-air debut Sunday, August 13 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME. Starring Oscar®nominee and Emmy®winner Paul Giamatti, Corey Stoll and Maggie Siff, the 12-episode final season also marks the return of Emmy® winner Damian Lewis as fan-favorite Bobby “Axe” Axelrod.

“Billions has deftly explored power, money and greed in a way that not only made it a massive hit, but also defined its own genre thanks to the creative brain trust of Brian and David,” said Chris McCarthy, President & CEO, SHOWTIME/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks. “This final season is packed full of the incredible, complex dialogue and character dynamics fans have come to love, and we are thrilled to partner with them on turning this hit series into a global franchise.”

In season seven, alliances are turned on their heads. Old wounds are weaponized. Loyalties are tested. Betrayal takes on epic proportions. Enemies become wary friends. And Bobby Axelrod returns, as the stakes grow from Wall Street to the world. BILLIONS also stars David Costabile, Asia Kate Dillon, Dola Rashad, Jeffrey DeMunn, Sakina Jaffrey, Daniel Breaker and Toney Goins.

Since its premiere in 2016, BILLIONS has been one of the most watched signature series on SHOWTIME, year after year. As previously announced, SHOWTIME is in the process of expanding the BILLIONS universe with several projects in development, all executive produced by BILLIONS showrunners Brian Koppelman and David Levien, who have established their own acclaimed brand of propulsive storytelling and articulately incorrigible characters. Paul Schiff will also executive produce the new projects in this franchise.

BILLIONS is created and executive produced by showrunners Koppelman and Levien (Rounders). Beth Schacter also serves as showrunner and executive producer. The series was also created by Andrew Ross Sorkin. All previous seasons of BILLIONS are available for subscribers on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME. For more information about BILLIONS, visit SHO.com, follow on Twitter,Instagram and Facebook, and join the conversation using #Billions.

What do you think? Are you sad that this Showtime series is ending, or is the timing right? Are you looking forward to Lewis’ return on the Billions series?

‘Fort Boyard’ & ‘Survivor’ Producers Set Up Banijay France Drama Label

Fort Boyard and Survivor producer ALP’s Alexia Laroche-Joubert and Frédéric Lussato are launching a Banijay-backed scripted label in France.

Screen Line Productions will focus on character-driven content, as the two French vets develop original ideas as well as book adaptations, spanning mainly youth-oriented themes. Banijay said a debut commission will be unveiled soon. As part of the launch, the pair have appointed Lavinia Jullien as Development Executive.

The pair run ALP, which produces some of France’s biggest non-scripted shows including Fort Boyard and Koh Lanta (Survivor).

“During my career I have created and adapted many formats from the world of entertainment including Koh Lanta (Survivor) and Star Academy, with the commonality of all being popular formats,” said Laroche-Joubert. “With our knowledge of this audience paired with production expertise, Screen Line is geared up to develop ambitious projects for a wide audience.”

Banijay France also runs the likes of Shine Fiction, Terence Films, Marathon and Montmartre. Yesterday, Banijay unveiled a move into the live events space with the acquisition of Olympic Games ceremony organizer Balich Wonder Studio.

‘The Last Of Us’: How A Video Game Was Made Into An HBO Hit & Why Writers Made That Romantic Pivot In Episode 3 – Deadline FYC House + HBO Max

Please note: the screening and panel took place on April 28, before the start of the WGA Strike.

Once he saw Chernobyl, Neil Druckmann decided it was time to have lunch with the writer behind the hit HBO limited series. Druckmann had no ulterior motive in wanting to meet Craig Mazin other than to “gush” about the 2019 historical drama — that is, until they began to chat about The Last of Us action-adventure game, which Druckmann wrote in 2014.

“He was a big fan of The Last of Us,” Druckmann recalled at April’s The Last of Us hosted by Deadline FYC House + HBO Max. “So then we started charting about it and in the conversation, I saw the love he had for the material in a way that I never felt with another person outside of Naughty Dog.”

Within weeks, Mazin arranged for the two of them to meet with veteran producer Carolyn Strauss before pitching the adaptation to HBO.

“She bought into the show and did this thing that now everybody does, which is like, ‘I’m not a gamer, don’t be offended,’” remembered Mazin. “I’m like, it’s okay. You don’t have to be a gamer to enjoy this story.”

And with that, The Last of Us was in production — and during a global pandemic, no less. Fortunately, there was no concern about dramatizing a post-apocalyptic story during an already depressing time in our world’s history.

“We were already in too deep by then,” Strauss remembered. “We just had to keep going. I guess it was an unhappy accident.”

“Honestly, the show has a lot of depressing things in it, to be fair,” continued Mazin. “It has something for everyone really. So our feeling was, ‘eh, what’s one more horrible thing?”

The result was an adaptation that remains mostly faithful to the game — that is, until episode 3, when Mazin and Druckmann introduces a survivalist named Bill (Nick Offerman) who falls hard for a man (Murray Bartlett) who stumbles onto his land. Bill and Frank exist in The Last of Us game, but their romance is more implied than actually depicted. In fact, you never see Frank in the game and their relationship ends badly.

In the adaptation, however, the two live a peaceful life in Bill’s bucolic little neighborhood, until tragedy brings their storybook romance to an end.

“It was something that Neil and I talked about as we were going through, before we wrote any scripts,” recalled Mazin. “We just broke the whole story of the game apart into episodes and talked about how we wanted to adapt it. And one of the things that’s amazing about Neil, and I think this makes him unique among people who create source material, is that he understands an adaptation is not just something you do just because it’s essential. The adaptation in the correct way is important. And there are times where you want to just kind of go in a different way. One of the things that Neil would say all the time is that there was this very freeing aspect of storytelling in this medium, because we could shift perspective in the game. You are Joel, or later on in the game, you’re Ellie, but you’re either one and you’re never anybody else.”

“So to that extent, Bill had to be somebody that you meet as Joel and you experience as Joel, who serves the story of Joel and Ellie,” continued Mazin. “We didn’t have that. We had an interest in showing how time had passed from the beginning of the outbreak to where we were in the show. But I didn’t really want to do some random, kind of here’s the way the world went. I always like to look inside of relationships, and there was an opportunity to take a kernel of a story that was in the game and just expand it and turn it on its ear and make it the centerpiece that is sort of like a donut hole. It was just a wonderful time making that episode.”
