Bill Maher Talks Of Trump, Guns And Atheists In A Lively ‘Real Time’ Exchange

It was a week full of news, from the looming Donald Trump indictment through the Nashville school shooting. Or as Bill Maher put it on Friday’s Real Time, “March came in like a lion, and went out with Trump on the lam.”

Maher was obviously delighted that Trump, one of his favorite targets, had a real bad week. He noted the irony of “the most boastful man in history is indicted by a man named Bragg.” Also ironic: “He spent his whole life stiffing people, and the one time he pays them….”

Maher was ready to spar Friday, and for once, he had panelists ready to push back. The show started with Republican Governor of New Hampshire Chris Sununu, who admitted that the Trump indictment is “an absolute circus.” Sununu, although a loyal Republican, voiced that he didn’t think Trump will be the GOP nominee in 2024, saying that he “can’t win” the general election.

However, he pushed back on Maher’s advocacy for downgrading Trump because of Jan. 6 and the Trump insistence that it wasn’t a fair election. Sununu agreed that Jan. 6 was one of the worst days in US history, but pointed out the ensuing Democrat failures including “losing energy independence”

Sununu noted that he lived in San Francisco for three years, and challenged Maher to defend the deterioration in that city. “You tell me the Democrats are winning (there),” he said, calling it “a humanitarian crisis.”

The guest did tiptoe around the possibility that he would enter the GOP presidential primaries, but wouldn’t commit until things play out more.

The panel discussion featured journalist and author James Kirchick, and Winsome Sears, the latter the first woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia and first woman of color and Jamaican-born American to hold statewide office in Virginia’s history.

After some back and forth on Trump, the talk turned to the school shooting in Nashville and its ties to the proliferation of guns.

Sears said she was a Marine, and had no problem admitting she would use a gun if someone broke into her home. She said Black women were the fastest-rising demo that’s arming themselves.

“I don’t like guns,” Maher admitted. “But I’m glad they exist.” He noted that his slight stature is akin to some women, and that a gun “levels the playing field.”

Maher did say it was not unreasonable to make guns harder to obtain. But he claimed that opposition to that was a conservative tactic used against the crazier liberals. “You want to be crazy? I’ll be crazy too. And I have bullets.”

Maher’s usual mid-show break played a segment of the new J6 Choir song with Trump saying the Pledge of Allegiance. The usual path of a hit song followed by an album is likely, Maher said, holding up a mock album cover of “Appetite for Insurrection,” featuring such tracks as “I Guess That’s Why They Call It Fake News,” “The Kids are Alt-Right,” and “Midnight Call to Georgia.”

The panel wrapped with a discussion of the tricky issue of the trans shooter in Nashville and deadnaming issues.

Kirchick noted that the trans community is seeking “equality, dignity and respect,” and is already covered in those areas by an amendment to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and that most of the controversies surround children. “This is where the conflict is coming from.”

Maher said that trans activism “sometimes seems like a power game with them.”

Sears said that she wants to control all aspects of her children’s lives, and doesn’t want a drag queen giving them a lap dance at school.

“We need to come back to a place of sensibility,” she said. “You want to live a certain way, and I’ll do what I’m doing. Let’s be okay with that.”

Maher’s “New Rules” editorial talked of the need for a special holiday for atheists. See the monologue above.

Discovering Martha’s Vineyard for the first time, Summer Marie Thomas (Los Angeles) intends to have the best possible time while getting her flirt on.

Nicholas “Nick” Arrington (New York), a self-proclaimed style savant who has an outfit ready for every outing, competes with Amir for a housemate’s affection.

Mariah Torres met Jasmine in college and is also close with several members of the group. She’s looking forward to spending the summer with her friends, but things become heated in the house after an argument gets out of hand.

Kanye West Claims He Likes Jewish People Again After Viewing Jonah Hill In The Film ’21 Jump Street’

Kanye West is back on Instagram, and he’s a new man, he claims. His first message proclaimed a new-found love for the Jewish people.

Why? Jonah Hill’s acting in the 2012 film 21 Jump Street was the apparent tipping point.

“Watching Jonah Hill in 21 Jump street made me like Jewish people again,” he wrote on the platform alongside a poster for the 2012 film.

“No one should take anger against one or two individuals and transform that into hatred towards millions of innocent people. No Christian can be labeled antisemite knowing Jesus is Jew. Thank you Jonah Hill I love you.”

West lit a match to his career over the last few months, making offensive comments on social media and in interviews. That resulted in lost business deals with various entities and his ostracism from polite society.

A particular flashpoint was his comment that he would go “death con 3 on Jewish people” via Twitter in October 2022.

So far, Jonah Hill has not responded.

‘Outer Banks’ Leads Nielsen U.S. Streaming Chart After Season 3 Debut, ‘The Last Of Us’ Dominates Acquired Programming With Episode 7

Outer Banks took over Nielsen’s U.S. streaming chart for the week of February 20 to 26. Following the release of Season 3 on February 23, the Netflix series drew nearly 3.2B viewing minutes during that measurement interval.

According to Nielsen, nearly 1B of those viewing minutes (roughly a third) came from Seasons 1 and 2, suggesting that the release of the third installment attracted many new viewers as well as re-watchers. Nielsen doesn’t generally indicate viewing by season, so this gives interesting insight into how much of the viewing from this interval came from Season 3. Netflix self-reported that all three seasons were among its Top 10 English-language series for that week.

Audiences were also enthralled by Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, which generated about 1.4B viewing minutes and came in at No. 2 on the overall streaming list.

Once again, HBO’s The Last of Us is putting up a strong showing, moving back up to third place on the charts this week. The Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey-led series managed about billion-minute week with the release of its seventh episode, generating 1.2B viewing minutes on HBO Max alone. It was the most-watched acquired programming of the week. Nielsen says that Episode 7 (which was released with only a few hours left in the measurement interval) accounted for 22% of the weekly total while Episode 6 made up 64%.

As always, Nielsen’s measurement window only accounts for a few hours of viewing of the most recent episode — in this case Episode 7 — since it bows on Sunday nights. Nielsen streaming measurements only account for viewing on HBO Max, so these numbers don’t reflect any viewership on HBO’s linear channel. According to HBO, Episode 7 saw 7.7M same-day viewers across linear and digital platforms.

Netflix’s We Have a Ghost took fourth place on the overall list with 930M minutes viewed. While it did drop significantly, from No. 1 to No. 9, You also managed to stay on the chart with 797M minutes viewed.

New Amsterdam, which streams on both Netflix and Peacock, fell to No. 6 with 850M minutes viewed. Bluey held down the fort for Disney+, and the rest of the spots went to Netflix with Cocomelon, NCIS, and Perfect Match.

Here is the full Top 10, with streaming service, title, number of episodes (“1″=feature film) and minutes of viewing:

The CW Alternative Exec Cyle Zezo Exits After 9 Years

EXCLUSIVE: Cyle Zezo, who oversaw alternative programming at The CW, is leaving the broadcaster.

Zezo, who was VP, and Head of Alternative and Digital Programming at The CW, is leaving after having spent nine years at the network.

His departure was somewhat expected after it brought in former NBCUniversal exec Heather Olander to head up its push into non-scripted. Zezo is expected to move into production.

“Cyle is following his passion to be a producer,” a spokeswoman for The CW told Deadline. “He will continue to executive produce many unscripted shows for The CW and we look forward to continuing to work with him.”

Before The CW was acquired by Nexstar and brought in former Pop TV chief Brad Schwartz as President of Entertainment, Zezo worked closely with Gaye Hirsch, who was EVP, Development and who left as part of a round of layoffs in February.

Before the Nexstar acquisition, Zezo oversaw a threefold increase in unscripted programming hours with series such as Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Mysteries Decoded. He was also in charge of specials such as the Critics’ Choice Awards, iHeartRadio Music Festival and iHeartRadio Jingle Ball and acquiring international content such as The Great Chocolate Showdown and Killer Camp.

Having started his career at APA, he joined the company in 2014 and worked his way up from a coordinator, before becoming a manager, director and VP.

Fox Unveils Major Expansion Of Century City Studio Lot With 9 New Soundstages, Media Campus

Fox Corp. is planning a major building overhaul and expansion of its Century City lot including nine new soundstages as well as a media campus, office space and focus on related transportation infrastructure.

Los Angeles continues to struggle to meet the demand for sound stages, which is increasingly driving production and entertainment jobs outside the region.

The project, called Fox Future, will bring the number of stages to 24. Additional stages will be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and designed for modern film, television and content.

A new LEED-Platinum designed media campus office building will support lot operations. Located on the Lot along Olympic Boulevard, the 24-floor building will focus on creating collaborative open spaces and shared and private offices, all designed specifically for film and TV production.

It said the move seeks “to build the studio of the future amid the continued evolution of Century City, which was born out of the Fox studio backlot and designed as intersection of creativity, business, and entertainment production” in LA.

“The Fox Studio Lot is one of the most iconic and treasured production locations in the history of entertainment and is a rich part of our history,” said Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch. The Fox Future project represents a long-term commitment to our industry, to our community, and to the City of Los Angeles.”

Fox estimates the project will generate approximately $9 million in direct annual revenue to the City of Los Angeles, maintain thousands of existing jobs by helping to curb runaway production and create new jobs throughout Southern California.

It will provide over $20 million in anticipated Transportation Improvement and Mitigation Fees, which focus on West Los Angeles specific improvements, and further support of the much-anticipated Metro D-Line when it opens to Century City in 2025.

EXCLUSIVE: Nine years after joining UTA as a partner and talent agent, Brian Swardstrom is leaving to form new ventures. That will include producing several projects with his husband, Oscar-winning producer Peter Spears, whose credits include Nomadland, Bones and All, and Call Me by Your Name.

Swardstrom will stay at UTA until June, to help transition his estimable list of clients to others across the agency. This is an amicable exit, and it’s quite a strong list of longtime clients we are talking about that he has accumulated over his 35-year career.

That list includes Dune star Timothée Chalamet (some sources say they expect Swardstrom and Chalamet’s professional relationship to continue), Frances McDormand, Damian Lewis, Tilda Swinton, Cynthia Erivo, Michael C. Hall, Claire Foy, John Lithgow, Edward Norton, Michael Douglas, Matthew Macfadyen, Léa Seydoux, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Kevin Kline, Francine Maisler, Sally Field, Jamie Bell, Ben Foster, Theo James, Rupert Wyatt, Louis Garrel, and more.

Spears has a production label, Cor Cordium, which has a first look deal at Searchlight Pictures.

“After 35 years in the representation business, I’m excited to expand my horizons into other areas,” Swardstrom told Deadline. “It’s been a great run at UTA, and I’d like to go out on a high.  I am going to miss my colleagues but more than anything, I’m going to miss my clients, most of whom I have been working with for years, if not decades. I know they will continue to be a part of my life, though, as I enter this new phase of my career.”

Said UTA President David Kramer: “Over the past nine years, Brian has played an integral role in helping grow our talent division and has been a mentor and friend to many across UTA. His impeccable taste and unparalleled relationships have made him one of the preeminent agents in the business and we look forward to working with him as he starts this next creative chapter of his career.”

Jimmy Kimmel Slaps Back At The Slap In 2023 Oscars Monologue

UPDATE, with video: Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel went there: With everyone wondering whether he’d use last year’s big moment – the Slap of Chris Rock by Will Smith – for monologue source material, the host wasted little time providing an answer.

“If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during the show,” Kimmel snarked, “you will be awarded the Oscar for Best Actor, and permitted to give a 19-minute long speech.”

Kimmel also took aim at the audience response to The Slap: “If anything happens,” he told this year’s crowd, “just do what you did last year – nothing. Just sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug.”

The host then warned that if anyone wants to jump on stage “and get jiggy with it” – another not so subtle jibe at Smith – they’d first have to get through security: An audience filled with superheroes and toughies from The Mandalorian, Creed, Everything Everywhere All at Once as well as Spider-man and “Fable-man.” Steven Spielberg. Also on security duty: Guillermo (no, not del Toro, but Guillermo Rodriguez, Kimmel’s late-night sidekick).

Kimmel took the stage after a brief video opening showing behind the scenes footage of various nominated films, as well as clips from those films, ending with a joke bit in which Kimmel was seated behind Tom Cruise in a Top Gun jet. He parachuted out of the plane, then appeared on stage with the crumpled parachute at his feet.

Poking fun at both Cruise and James Cameron – both outspoken proponents of seeing movies in theaters rather than on TV – Kimmel pointed out that both men were no-shows at the Dolby Theater tonight. Kimmel also made reference to Cruise’s longtime history with Scientology, describing the actor’s shirtless scene in Top Gun: Maverick with the words “L. Ron Hubba-Hubba.”

RELATED: https://deadline.com/gallery/2023-oscars-red-carpet/

Kimmel also managed to tie together the issue of diversity with The Slap by noting this year’s diversity of nominees “from every corner of Dublin – the odds of another fight on stage just went way up.”

in one of the better jokes of the monologue, Kimmel noted that both Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser – both nominated this year – appeared in 1992’s mostly forgotten Encino Man. “Two actors from Encino Man are nominated for Oscars. What an incredible night this must be for the two of you, and what a very difficult night for Pauly Shore.”

Kimmel got in a joke about the latest Hollywood fad – the use of a diabetes drug for weight loss – by saying, “As I look around this room I can’t help wondering, is Ozempic right for me?”

  • On Hollywood’s lack of new ideas: “Poor Steven Spielberg had to make a movie about Steven Spielberg.”
  • On composer John Williams, the oldest-ever Oscar nominee: “John turned 91 last month and he’s still scoring.”
  • On the difference between movies and TV: “A TV show can’t lose $100 million….Anyone from Babylon here?”
  • On Avatar director James Cameron: “Some cynics are saying Jim Cameron is not here tonight because he didn’t get a Best Director nomination, and while I find that ver hard to believe about a man of such deep humility, he does have a point. I mean, how does the Academy not nominate the man who directed Avatar? What do they think he is, a woman?”
  • Joking that Rihanna’s nine-month-old baby “pooped” backstage, Kimmel said the last person who did that was “the accountant who mixed up the envelopes.” (For those with short memories, that’s a La La Land-Moonlight joke).
  • On the Elvis movie ritual between Tom Hanks and Austin Butler, in which the two actors typed letters to one another as their characters Col. Tom Parker and Elvis Presley: “Just goes to show you how incredibly…silly…this all is.”

Kimmel ended his monologue by warning winners not to go over their allotted time: This year, he said as the band began to play him off, producers will not only strike up the band but will send out the dancers from RRR to escort the long-winded from the stage. The dancers did just that with Kimmel.
