The Final Straw TV show on ABC: canceled or renewed for season 2?

Tipsy the Panda won’t be back to wreak more havoc this summer. ABC has reportedly cancelled The Final Straw so there won’t be a second season. The first season of 10 episodes debuted in July and finished airing last September.

A primetime game show, The Final Straw TV series is a larger-than-life Jenga-style competition hosted by Janelle James. Four teams of contestants compete in a battle against gravity and physics. They attempt to remove items from life-sized themed stacks chock full of household objects, ranging from basketballs to small kitchen appliances. The host is sometimes joined onstage by the mischievous Tipsy the Panda, who is hell-bent on destroying the stacks. If the tower falls, that team is eliminated. The last team standing will compete against The Mega Stack for a chance to win the grand prize of $250,000.

Airing on Sunday nights, the first season of The Final Straw averages a 0.30 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.09 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). It was one of the alphabet network’s lower-rated series last summer.

The fates of Holey Moley and To Tell the Truth have yet to be announced by ABC, but they weren’t among the network’s summer plans. In January 2022, Truth host Anthony Anderson said that seven seven had already been filmed but those episodes have seemingly been rolled into the sixth season of 27 episodes.

What do you think? Have you checked out The Final Straw on ABC? Are you sorry that this game show has been cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

You: Season Five; Killer Netflix Series Renewed for Final Year

You TV show on Netflix: renewed for season 5, no season 6

Joe Goldberg’s reign is coming to an end. Netflix has renewed the popular You TV series for a fifth and final season.

Executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo will serve as co-showrunners, taking over from Sera Gamble. The fourth season of 10 episodes concluded earlier this month and has spent five weeks on the streamer’s Global Top 10 English TV list.

The You TV show is a psychological thriller series based on the You novels by Caroline Kepnes. The story begins in New York and follows a bookstore manager and serial killer named Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley). He falls in love and develops an extreme obsession with Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), an aspiring writer.

In season four, Joe has fled to Europe to escape his “messy” past, adopt a new identity, and, once again, to pursue “true love.” Joe soon finds himself in the strange new role of reluctant detective as he discovers he may not be the only killer in London. His future depends on identifying and stopping whoever’s targeting his new friend group of uber-wealthy socialites. The cast includes Tati Gabrielle, Charlotte Ritchie, Lukas Gage, Ed Speleers, Tilly Keeper, Amy-Leigh Hickman, Niccy Lin, Aidan Cheng, Brad Alexander, Ozioma Whenu, and Eve Austin.

Executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter shared, “We are so incredibly grateful to Netflix and Sera and everyone that has been a part of this show from the beginning. Sera is the most brilliant writer and partner and she will remain a key part of the You family as an executive producer. We intend to bring her every idea we can from our company for years to come. Ever since our friends at Alloy shared Caroline Kepnes’ fantastic book we have always conceived it as a five-season journey. We are excited to continue our relationship with Mike and Justin as they take over the reins as co-showrunners and prepare to bring Joe Goldberg home.”

You became an instant sensation on Netflix with a resounding cultural impact that has grown season over season. We’re excited – and a bit terrified – to see how it all ends for Joe Goldberg, but one thing is for sure: You are in for an unforgettable ending,” said Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series, Netflix, US and Canada.

Season five is expected to debut sometime in 2024.

What do you think? Have you enjoyed the You TV series on Netflix? Are you glad this show ends with season five, or would you have watched season six and beyond?

Willow: Cancelled by Disney+; No Season Two for Sequel of George Lucas and Ron Howard Movie

Willow TV Show on Disney+: canceled, no season 2

Willow is not returning to Disney+ for a second season, per Deadline. The streaming service has cancelled the sequel series just two months after the first season ended.

The fantasy series picks up years after the original 1988 movie with a new adventure for Nelwyn sorcerer Willow, played once again by Warwick Davis. Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel, and Tony Revolori also starred in the series, which “introduced new characters and was set in a world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls and other mystical creatures flourish. An unlikely group of heroes set off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world.”

The cancellation comes as Disney+ and other streaming services are making cuts in spending in an effort to be profitable. While the Willow series was received well by critics, the show didn’t become the big mainstream hit the service was hoping for.

Willow remains an important IP in the Lucasfilm library so it could be revisited at a later time.

What do you think? Did you watch Willow on Disney+? Were you hoping for a second season of this fantasy series?

Three Pines: Cancelled; No Season Two for Prime Video Series Starring Alfred Molina

Three Pines will not be returning to Prime Video for a second season. The streaming service has cancelled the murder mystery drama series starring Alfred Molina. The eight-episode first season wrapped on December 23rd.

Also starring Rossif Sutherland, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, and Sarah Booth, the series is based on the book series by Louise Penny. The story follows Chief Inspector Armand Gamache (Molina) as he investigates crimes in Three Pines, an idyllic village in the Eastern townships of Québec.

Prime Video said the following about the cancellation, per Variety:

“We are proud of the work done on the series and the opportunity to work with great partners.”

Penny spoke about the decision to cancel the series based on her work, per Deadline:

“I am shocked and upset. Like any show, [Three Pines] had growing pains but it was only going to get better and better.”

The showrunner of the series, Emilia di Giorlamo, also discussed the series’ demise on social media:

“Thank you for all the overwhelming messages about ‘Three Pines.’ I know there’s a lot of disappointment that the show won’t be returning and I’m sad for the wonderful cast, crew and fans.

I was not involved in the conversations and negotiations around renewal but I have been told Left Bank, Sony & Prime Video all wanted to bring the show back but were unable to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.”

One of the series’ stars, Tailfeathers, expressed their sadness over the drama’s cancellation:

“It has been difficult to process the news that there will be no second season of #ThreePines. Thank you to everyone who watched and supported the show. It meant the world to me knowing that this show resonated with such a massive global audience. As an Indigenous actor, I never thought I’d have the opportunity to be the leading woman on a #1 show like this. It was huge. Our stories matter and this show demonstrated that audiences, regardless of background, are hungry for Indigenous content.”

What do you think? Are you sad that Three Pines has been cancelled? Did you want to see a second season of the Prime Video drama?

Barry is coming to an end. HBO and star/co-creator Bill Hader have confirmed that the comedy series is ending with its upcoming fourth season of eight episodes. Hader said, “It’s been an amazing journey making this show, and it’s bittersweet that the story has come to its natural conclusion.”

A dark comedy crime series, the Barry TV show stars Hader, Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan, and Henry Winkler, with Michael Irby, Fred Melamed, Andrew Leeds, Patrick Fischler, and Jessy Hodges in recurring roles. The story begins as former Marine Barry Berkman (Hader), a Cleveland hitman, travels to Los Angeles to kill someone. He joins an acting class taught by self-obsessed Gene Cousineau (Winkler). There, Barry meets aspiring actress Sally Reed (Goldberg), falls in love with the craft, and wants to change careers. Meanwhile, he continues dealing with criminal associates like Monroe Fuches (Root) and NoHo Hank (Carrigan). Getting out of the business is messy.

The final season, which kicks off on Sunday, April 16th, at 10:00 PM, picks up after the explosive third season’s finale. As the season begins, Cousineau is hailed as a hero as Barry’s arrest has shocking consequences.

Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO and HBO Max Comedy Programming, said “After three masterful seasons of BARRY, we are eager for viewers to see the powerful, complex and hilarious conclusion to Barry Berkman’s story. It has been a pleasure working with this immensely talented team including Bill Hader, Alec Berg, Aida Rodgers and the entire exceptional cast and crew.”
