Big Sky: Cancelled on ABC; No Fourth Season for Crime Thriller Series

Big Sky TV show on ABC: canceled or renewed for season 4?

(ABC)

It’s case closed on Big Sky. ABC has officially cancelled the series, eliminating chances for a fourth season.

A crime thriller series, the Big Sky TV series stars Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury, Dedee Pfeiffer, Jensen Ackles, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Reba McEntire, and J. Anthony Pena. Angelique Cabral, Rex Linn, Rosanna Arquette, Michael Malarkey, Luke Mitchell, Seth Gabel, Henry Ian Cusick, Anirudh Pisharody, and Madalyn Horcher appear in recurring roles. In the third season, private detective Cassie Dewell (Bunbury), undersheriff Jenny Hoyt (Winnick), and newly appointed sheriff Beau Arlen (Ackles) maintain order in Helena, Montana, with their investigative skills. The trio faces a formidable mystery when a local backcountry trip led by charismatic outfitter Sunny Barnes (McEntire) goes awry. No camper can be trusted and danger lurks around every jagged rock and gnarled tree.

Airing on Wednesday nights, the third season of Big Sky averaged a 0.25 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.28 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (includes all DVR playback through 3:00 AM). Compared to season two, that’s down by 18% in the demo and down by 12% in viewership. It was one of ABC’s lowest-rated scripted series compared to other shows on the network.

The show added 110% more viewers in the live+7 day ratings, but that was not enough to secure a fourth-season renewal.

The fourth season of 13 episodes (the show’s smallest season) finished airing in January.

What do you think? Have you kept up with the Big Sky TV series on ABC? Are you sorry to hear this thriller series hasn’t been renewed for a fourth season?

Lockwood & Co: Cancelled, No Season Two for Supernatural Detective Series

Lockwood & Co. TV Show on Netflix: canceled or renewed?

Netflix has cancelled Lockwood & Co. after one season. The British supernatural detective series, based on the novels by Jonathan Stroud, was created by Joe Cornish. Starring Ruby Stokes, Cameron Chapman, Ali Hadji-Heshmati. Ivanno Jeremiah, Luke Treadaway, and Morven Christie, the series follows a trio of teen ghost hunters in London.

Variety reports that “while Netflix was very pleased with the show, and especially the work that had gone into it, viewing numbers didn’t meet the threshold to greenlight a second season.”

The Complete Fiction company, founded by Cornish, Edgar Wright, Nira Park, and Rachael Prior, has other projects in development with the streaming service and released a statement about the cancellation of the series:

“With heavy hearts, we announce that ‘Lockwood & Co.’ will not be returning for a second series. Making this show was one of the most rewarding experiences of our careers and we will forever treasure it. Being trusted by the supremely talented Jonathan Stroud to adapt his outstanding series of books was an honour and a privilege. Working with him as closely as we did across the development, production and release of Lockwood & Co has made him a friend, and part of the Complete Fiction family, for life.

We are particularly proud of the gifted young actors who brought Jonathan’s beloved fictional characters to the screen with such warmth, charm and vulnerability. Ruby, Cameron and Ali were our perfect Lucy, Lockwood and George. We couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated or talented trio. All three are superstars and we can’t wait to see them shine in the dazzling bright future that undoubtedly awaits them. We want to thank our breathtakingly talented cast and crew for the dedication and top-level craft they brought to this production. The love and the care they took is in every frame. We also want to thank our brilliant team at Netflix U.K., who shared and supported our passion and vision for the show from start to finish. We are all very proud of it.

To the fans – to Lock Nation – you really have been the greatest. We cannot thank you enough for how much you have embraced, celebrated and loved the show. You are the kindest, most creative group of people online and it has been so gratifying to see how your passion for these characters and this world has brought you all together. This might be the end of the line for the TV show, but the books live on, as do the friendships made. We encourage you to embrace both.

So many people have watched and enjoyed the show globally, and that, at the end of the day, is why we do what we do. So keep watching great TV. Keep going to the movies. Keep taking chances on new things. Stay ‘just reckless enough.’”

What do you think? Have you watched this show? Did you want to see a second season of Lockwood & Co?

The Winchesters: Cancelled; Supernatural Sequel Series Not Returning for Season Two on CW

The Winchesters TV show on The CW: canceled or renewed for season 2?

John and Mary’s tale will not continue into the 2023-24 television season on The CW. The network has cancelled The Winchesters’ plans for a second season.

A fantasy-horror drama series, The Winchesters TV show is a sequel of sorts to the long-running  Supernatural series. It stars Meg Donnelly, Drake Rodger, Jonathan ”JoJo” Fleites, Nida Khurshid, Demetria McKinney, Bianca Kajlich, and Jensen Ackles (narration). Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Ackles), the series tells the untold love story of how his parents, veteran John Winchester (Rodger) and demon hunter Mary Campbell (Donnelly), put it all on the line not only to save their love but the entire world. The two cross paths as they’re each searching for information about their fathers. They join forces with young hunter-in-training Latika (Khurshid) and easygoing hunter Carlos (Fleites) to uncover the hidden truths about both their families. Their investigation leads them to a rare book emporium, whose owner, Ada (McKinney), has an interest in the occult and could provide the missing pieces to their puzzle.

Airing on Tuesday nights, the first season of The Winchesters averaged a 0.07 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 463,000 viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). Compared to the rest of the network’s scripted series, Winchesters was a middle-of-the-road performer.  In the live+7 day ratings, the series picked up 80% more viewers.

In days gone by, those ratings would have been enough to land the series a second season renewal. However, now that The CW is primarily owned by Nexstar, the network is focusing on airing inexpensive programming — primarily unscripted and acquired series.

Management has said that the goal is for the network to become profitable by 2025. and part of that plan includes cancelling most original programming. All American and Walker, have been renewed while Kung Fu and Walker: Independence have been axed.

The de facto series finale of the Winchesters series aired in early March.

What do you think? Did you watch The Winchesters TV show on The CW? Are you disappointed this series has been cancelled and won’t be back for a second season?

Fantasy Island: Cancelled by FOX, No Season Three for Reboot Series

Fantasy Island TV show on FOX: canceled or renewed for season 3?

The mysterious island resort has been closed by FOX. The network has cancelled its Fantasy Island series, so it’s not returning for a third season. The de facto series finale aired last night.

A drama series, the Fantasy Island TV show is based on the 1977-84 series of the same name. This incarnation stars Roselyn Sánchez, Kiara Barnes, and John Gabriel Rodriquez, with Alexa Mansour recurring. The story is set at a luxury resort, where any fantasy guests request is fulfilled, although they rarely turn out as expected. Different people arrive at the resort with dreams and desires and depart enlightened and transformed through the magical realism of Fantasy Island. Elena Roarke (Sanchez) is the steward of this mysterious island and is a descendant of the iconic Mr. Roarke. Assisting Elena is Ruby Okoro (Barnes), a young woman with an old soul who arrives with a terminal illness and is given a new lease on life there. There’s also pilot Javier (Rodriquez), the head of island transportation and a jack of all trades, and Helene (Mansour), a young woman who comes to the island looking for her biological father. Guest stars in the second season include Frankie J. Alvarez, James Denton, Izzy Diaz, Rachael Harris, Teri Hatcher, Cheryl Hines, Marie Osmond, Kyla Pratt, Jason Priestley, Andy Richter; Jai Rodriguez, and Lynn Whitfield.

Airing on Monday nights, the second season of Fantasy Island averages a 0.20 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.77 million viewers. Compared to season one, that’s down by 32% in the demo and up by 4% in viewership in the live+same day ratings (includes DVR playback through 3:00 AM). In the live+7 day ratings, episodes pick up over 50% more viewers.

The ratings for the show’s first season weren’t very good, and a significant decline in the demo numbers this season likely hurt its chances of survival. Even though the series was produced economically, with such low ratings, the network likely decided to roll the dice and make way for a new show.

“We were very pleased with Fantasy Island’s fun and escapist creative, which we had hoped would gain strong traction among viewers,” according to a network statement. “Sony Pictures Television is an important partner of ours, and we look forward to continuing to work with them on Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, Doc, and the upcoming animated series Universal Basic Guys/Hoagie Bros.  We’d also like to thank Fantasy Island’s cast, led by Roselyn Sánchez, Kiara Barnes and John Gabriel Rodriquez, crew and executive producers Liz Craft, Sarah Fain and Anne Clements for their partnership on the series.”

What do you think? Have you enjoyed watching the Fantasy Island TV series on FOX? Are you sorry to know that it’s not been renewed for a third season? Did you expect it to be cancelled?

East New York: Cancelled; CBS Police Drama Series Not Getting Second Season

East New York TV show on CBS: canceled or renewed for season 2?

The men and women of the 74th Precinct won’t be back on the beat for the 2023-24 television season. CBS has cancelled any plans for East New York to have a second year.

A police procedural series, the East New York TV show stars Amanda Warren, Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Olivia Luccardi, and Lavel Schley. The story revolves around the officers and detectives of the 74th Precinct in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn. It’s a working-class neighborhood amid social upheaval while the early seeds of gentrification have been planted. Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Warren) is the newly promoted boss of the precinct who has family ties to the area. She’s determined to deploy creative methods to protect her beloved community with the help of her officers and detectives. Her team includes Chief John Suarez (Smits); training officer Marvin Sandeford (Santiago-Hudson); Detective Tommy Killian (Rankin); Captain Stan Yenko (Kind); Detective Crystal Morales (Rodriguez); trainee Andre Bentley (Schley); and patrol officer Brandy Quinlan (Luccardi). Regina Haywood has a vision. She and the squad of the 74th Precinct will not only serve their community – they’ll also become part of it.

The first season of East New York averages a 0.38 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.01 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). In the live+7 day ratings, the series picks up nearly 40% more viewers.

CBS and the show’s studio, Warner Bros., had been in talks about a renewal for a while, and things were looking positive. However, the network reversed its decision to cancel SWAT today, and it’s believed that the two police shows had been essentially competing for the same spot on the 2023-24 schedule. Since SWAT has a more established track record and was doing slightly better in the ratings, East New York ended up getting cancelled.

The de facto series finale of East New York airs on May 14th. In the “Ruskin Roulette” episode, Haywood’s leadership is questioned after a tragic shooting close to home, and her relationship with Suarez is tested.

True Lies, another freshman drama from an outside studio, was also cancelled today.

What do you think? Have you watched the East New York TV series on CBS? Are you disappointed this police drama wasn’t renewed for a second season? Are you surprised that it’s been cancelled?

Call Me Kat: Cancelled; FOX Sitcom Not Returning for Season Four

Call Me Kat TV show on FOX: canceled, no season 4

Kat’s cafe has closed. The FOX network has cancelled the Call Me Kat sitcom, so it won’t be returning for a fourth season. The de facto series finale aired last night.

A multi-camera comedy series, the Call Me Kat TV show is based on the British Miranda series and stars Mayim Bialik, Swoosie Kurtz, Kyla Pratt, Cheyenne Jackson, Julian Gant, and Jack McBrayer. Guests in season three include Ken Jennings, Kevin Sussman, Vicki Lawrence, and Parker Young. The story follows Kat (Bialik), a woman who struggles every day against society (and her mother) to prove that she can live a happy and fulfilling life — despite still being single at 39 years old. Kat’s mother, Sheila (Kurtz), views her daughter being single as her own personal failure. After leaving her job as a University of Louisville college professor, Kat spends the money her parents had set aside for her wedding to open a cat café. Working alongside Kat at the cafe are friends Randi (Pratt) and Gideon (McBrayer). As Kat celebrates her independence, her single-forever plans begin to veer off-course when her former crush and good friend, Max (Jackson), returns to town. Max takes a job as a bartender at the piano bar across the street from Kat’s place and works with his friend, Carter (Gant).

The third season of Call Me Kat averages a 0.21 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.17 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (includes all DVR playback through 3:00 AM). Compared to season two, that’s down by 41% in the demo and down by 35% in viewership. When delayed viewing is factored in via the live+7 day ratings, episodes pick up nearly 90% more viewers.

Call Me Kat has been in danger of being cancelled each year but managed to snag a renewal each time — until now. The ratings saw a huge drop in season three, and since FOX only has slots for two live-action sitcoms, the network decided to try something new. Last night’s season finale had the feel of a series finale so it seems like the cast and crew had an idea that bad news was on the way.

The fates of Welcome to Flatch and Animal Control have yet to be announced. Flatch is produced by Sony and the studio made a very attractive deal that landed it a second season renewal last year. Animal Control is owned by FOX so a second-season renewal seems very likely.

What do you think? Have you enjoyed the Call Me Kat comedy series? Were you hoping it would be renewed for a fourth season? Are you disappointed that it’s been cancelled?
