Debris: Cancelled by NBC; No Season Two for Science-Fiction TV Series

Debris TV show on NBC: canceled or renewed for season 2?

(Photo: James Dittiger/NBC)

Operatives Jones and Beneventi won’t be uncovering answers on NBC in the 2021-22 television season. The Peacock network has cancelled the Debris TV series for a second year.

The Debris TV show stars Jonathan Tucker, Riann Steele, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scroobius Pip. The story begins as mysterious wreckage starts falling from the sky. A secretive international agency named Orbital is tasked with figuring out what the wreckage is, where it came from, and most importantly — what it can do. British MI6 operative Finola Jones (Steele) and American CIA agent Bryan Beneventi (Tucker) are partners but they have very different styles. However, they have no choice but to trust each other as they track down the debris scattered across the Western Hemisphere. Each fragment has unpredictable, powerful, and sometimes dangerous effects on the everyday people who find it. They must race against time as shadowy outside forces seek these objects for nefarious purposes.

Airing on Monday nights, the first season of Debris averaged a 0.38 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.79 million viewers in the live+same day ratings. While these numbers don’t include further delayed or streaming viewing, they are a very good indicator of how a show is performing, especially when compared to others on the same channel. Despite airing out of one of NBC’s highest-rated shows, The Voice, the drama was one of the network’s lowest-rated scripted shows.

The season finale of Debris aired on Monday night and not surprisingly left plotlines unresolved. The show’s series creator has talked about hoping to find a way to continue telling the story if it was cancelled.

Decisions have yet to be made on other NBC shows like Ellen’s Game of Games, Good Girls, Manifest, and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.

Check out our NBC status sheet to track the peacock network’s new series pickups, renewals, and cancellations. You can find lists of cancelled shows here.

Bulletproof: Cancelled by Sky; No Season Four for Crime Drama on The CW

Bulletproof TV show on The CW: canceled or renewed for season 4?

(© Sky UK Limited)

Season four of Bulletproof has been cancelled. The British crime drama was renewed for a fourth season in early 2021 by Sky but now, those plans have been killed. The crime drama has aired for three seasons in the United States on The CW.

Bulletproof stars Ashley Walters and Noel Clarke. The series centers on Aaron “Bish” Bishop (Clarke) and Ronald “Ronnie” Pike Jr (Walters) who are best friends and work as British NCA detectives in London. Although they are from vastly different backgrounds, these partners have a deep, brotherly bond that finds its foundation in their moral code. In season three, they head to South Africa in search of a much-needed vacation from their London day jobs. They get swept up in the kidnapping of a young girl and they soon find themselves delving into the criminal underbelly of Cape Town. This tense, action-packed journey takes them from the lavish world of Cape Town’s elite, through the poverty-stricken townships, with danger around every corner. Bishop and Pike learn that not everyone with a badge can be trusted.

The third season of Bulletproof (which ran for just three episodes) averaged a 0.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 474,000 viewers in the live+same day ratings. Compared to season two, that’s up by 24% in the demo and up by 36% in viewership, a rarity in a time where more and more people are switching to streaming platforms and delayed viewing.

According to Variety, the show’s cancellation follows multiple sexual misconduct allegations against Clarke. An investigation by The Guardian news outlet has seen 20 women coming forward with an array of allegations against the actor, including sexual harassment, unwanted touching or groping, sexually inappropriate behavior and comments on set, professional misconduct, taking and sharing sexually explicit pictures and videos without consent, and bullying. Clarke has “vehemently” denied all allegations.

The fourth season of Bulletproof was ordered earlier this year and, since the allegations broke last month, Sky put pre-production on hold. There were talks about replacing Clarke but he created and co-writes the show with Walters.

This Is Us: Season Six to End the NBC Family Drama Series

This Is Us TV show on NBC: ending with season six

(NBC)

The Pearson family is saying goodbye next year. Multiple sources have confirmed that This Is Us will end with the upcoming sixth season on the NBC network.

A family drama, This Is Us stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, Justin Hartley, Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Sullivan, Jon Huertas, Niles Fitch, Logan Shroyer, Hannah Zeile, Mackenzie Hancsicsak, Parker Bates, Lonnie Chavis, Eris Baker, and Faithe Herman. The series follows the Pearson family across the decades — from young parents Jack (Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Moore) in the 1980s to their adult kids Kevin (Hartley), Kate (Metz), and Randall (Brown) as they search for love and fulfillment in the present day, along with Toby (Sullivan) and Beth (Watson).

The fifth season of This Is Us is currently averaging a 1.08 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.77 million viewers in the live+same day ratings. Compared to season four, that’s down by 27% in the demo and down by 16% in viewership. There are two episodes left in the season.

Despite the declines, the drama remains the peacock network’s highest-rated scripted series so NBC will no likely be very sorry to see the series go.

In 2019, while NBC was still airing season three, This Is Us was renewed for three years, through season six. The drama’s creative team has previously said that they planned to end the show up with its sixth season. Later in 2019, series creator Dan Fogelman has said that he already has a portion of the finale already written. The main cast’s contracts also expire with year six.

The final episodes will begin filming this summer and will likely begin airing this fall. It’s unclear how many episodes will be produced. The show was renewed for three seasons of 18 episodes each but, due to the pandemic, only 16 installments were made for season five.

Black-ish: Season Eight; ABC Comedy Renewed for Final Season

Black-ish TV show on ABC: canceled or renewed for season 8?

(ABC/Craig Sjodin)

The Johnson family will be tackling new topics for one last time in the 2021-22 television season. ABC has renewed the Black-ish TV show for an eighth but final season.

A family comedy series, Black-ish stars Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, Marsai Martin, Laurence Fishburne, Jenifer Lewis, Peter Mackenzie, Deon Cole, and Jeff Meacham. Wealthy ad executive Dre Johnson (Anderson) and his wife, anesthesiologist Rainbow (Ross), want to give their children the best of life, as well as a strong foundation for a bright future. They’re determined that those will include a strong sense of cultural identity and respect for their past. That’s not always easy in a rapidly changing world. In the seventh season, the sitcom continues to look at current events through the lens of the Johnson family, addressing the global pandemic, systemic racism, and the movement for social justice and equality.

The seventh season of Black-ish averages a 0.48 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.38 million viewers in the live+same day ratings. Compared to season six, that’s down by 18% in the demo and down by 10% in viewership. That’s a moderate decline when compared to other series.

Series creator Kenja Barris announced the final season renewal on social media.

There’s been no word yet on the fate of Mixed-ish but this final season announcement may not bode well for its chances.

Rebel: Cancelled by ABC; No Season Two for Katey Sagal Drama Series

Rebel TV show on ABC: canceled or renewed for season 2?

(ABC/Karen Ballard)

Annie Bello won’t get to fight for new causes in the 2021-22 television season. ABC has cancelled the Rebel TV series so there won’t be a second year.

A drama, the Rebel TV show is inspired by the life of activist Erin Brockovich today and stars Katey Sagal, John Corbett, James Lesure, Lex Scott Davis, Tamala Jones, Ariela Barer, Kevin Zegers, Sam Palladio, and Andy Garcia. Annie “Rebel” Bello (Sagal) is a blue-collar legal advocate without a law degree. She’s a funny, messy, brilliant, and fearless woman who cares desperately about the causes she fights for and the people she loves. When Rebel applies herself to a fight she believes in, she will win at almost any cost.

Airing on Thursday nights, the first season of Rebel averages a 0.43 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.23 million viewers in the live+same day ratings.

The cancellation doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The series follows Grey’s Anatomy on the schedule but performs poorly in the ratings and loses a lot of its lead-in audience.  It’s one of the lowest-rated freshman series on the network this season.

Mixed-ish: Cancelled by ABC, No Season Three for Comedy Series

Mixed-ish TV show on ABC: canceled or renewed for season 3?

(ABC/Sami Drasin)

The story of Bow’s younger years has come to an early finish. ABC has cancelled the Mixed-ish TV series so season three won’t be coming for the 2021-22 television season.

A family comedy, the Mixed-ish TV show stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tika Sumpter, Christina Anthony, Arica Himmel, Ethan William Childress, Mykal-Michelle Harris, Gary Cole, and Tracee Ellis Ross (narrator). In this prequel spin-off series, Rainbow “Bow” Johnson (Ross) from Black-ish recounts her experiences of growing up in a mixed-race family in the 1980s. Bow’s parents, Paul (Gosselaar) and Alicia (Sumpter), decided to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs so that they could better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new lives in a more typical community, young Bow (Himmel) and her siblings, Santamonica (Harris) and Johan (Childress), navigate a mainstream school in which they’re perceived as neither black nor white. This family’s experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one’s own identity when the rest of the world can’t decide where you belong.

The second season of Mixed-ish averages a 0.40 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.96 million viewers. Compared to season one, that’s down by 38% in the demo and down by 35% in viewership. It’s one of the lowest-rated scripted series on the network

Earlier today, the network renewed Black-ish for an eighth and final season so it looks like that will be the end of the franchise on the network. Freeform will air season four of spin-off Grown-ish this summer.

All Rise TV show on CBS: canceled or renewed for season 3?

(Photo: Aaron Epstein/CBS)

This court won’t be back in session during the 2021-22 television season. CBS has cancelled the All Rise legal drama series so we won’t be seeing a third season.

All Rise stars Simone Missick, Wilson Bethel, Marg Helgenberger, Jessica Camacho, J. Alex Brinson, Lindsay Mendez, Ruthie Ann Miles, Lindsay Gort, and Audrey Corsa. The series follows the chaotic, hopeful (and sometimes absurd) world of those who work at a courthouse in Los Angeles. At the center of this drama series is Lola Carmichael (Missick), a recently appointed judge who was previously a highly regarded and impressive deputy district attorney. She depends on the counsel of people like her Deputy District Attorney Mark Callan (Bethel), Supervisory Judge Lisa Benner (Helgenberger), and pragmatic judicial assistant Sherri Kansky (Miles). Lola pushes the boundaries and challenges the expectations of what a judge can be and receives both support and pushback from those around her.

Airing on Monday nights, the second season of All Rise averages a 0.45 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.01 million viewers in the live+same day ratings. Compared to season one, that’s down by 27% in the demo and down by 26% in viewership. It’s one of the lower-rated scripted shows on CBS.

The cancellation follows a number of behind-the-scenes issues — including the departure of creator/showrunner Greg Spottiswood following misconduct allegations.

The de facto series finale will air on May 24th.

For Life TV show on ABC: canceled or renewed for season 3?

(ABC/Giovanni Rufino)

It looks like Aaron’s journey likely won’t continue into the 2021-22 television season. The For Life series has been cancelled so, there won’t be a third season — at least not on ABC.

Airing on Wednesday nights, the For Life TV show is inspired by the life of Isaac Wright Jr. and stars Nicholas Pinnock, Indira Varma, Joy Bryant, Dorian Missick, Tyla Harris, and Timothy Busfield. The series follows the tale of Aaron Wallace (Pinnock), an incarcerated man who becomes a licensed lawyer while still in prison. Aaron litigates cases for other inmates while fighting to overturn his own life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. In season two, Aaron continues his battle against the political machine that once put him away undeservedly while trying to rebuild his life on the outside. He has the continued help from the people who supported him — his family, wily one-time public defender Henry Roswell (Busfield), and his former prison warden, Safiya Masry (Varma).

The second season of For Life averaged a 0.35 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.81 million viewers in the live+same day ratings. Compared to season one, that’s down by 38% in the demo and down by 26% in viewership. It is the lowest-rated scripted show on the network for 2020-21 and finished airing its 10 episode season in late February.

Sony Pictures TV co-produces the drama series with ABC Signature and is expected to shop a possible third season to other outlets. For Life, has reportedly performed very well on Hulu, the streaming service which has released episodes the day after their linear release.
