Good Girls: Cancelled, No Season Five for NBC TV Series

Good Girls TV show on NBC: canceled or renewed for season 5?

(Photo: Chris Haston/NBC)

Beth, Ruby, and Annie won’t be back for the 2021-22 season. NBC has cancelled the Good Girls series so there won’t be a fifth year of the low-rated show.

A drama series, Good Girls stars Christina Hendricks, Retta, Mae Whitman, Reno Wilson, Manny Montana, Lidya Jewett, Isaiah Stannard, and Matthew Lillard. The TV series centers on three suburban moms who’ve struggled to get by. They hold up the local Fine & Frugal supermarket, but their take far exceeds their expectations and they find themselves in deep trouble with the local crime boss. In season four, the stakes get higher as the Secret Service closes in on the women’s counterfeit ring. When we last saw Beth, she was struggling to carve out her own criminal path separate from Rio, using her husband’s spa company, Boland Bubbles, as a front. Ruby seemed to have salvaged her marriage after a rocky road, but only time will tell if her hidden secrets implode. Annie is focusing on inner love and healing as she takes the journey to rebuild independence.

Airing on primarily on Sunday nights, the fourth season of Good Girls averages a 0.34 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.47 million viewers in the live+same day ratings. Compared to season three, that’s down by 20% in the demo and down by 20% in viewership (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). While these numbers don’t include further delayed or streaming viewing, they are a very good indicator of how a show is performing, especially when compared to others on the same channel. There can be other economic factors involved in a show’s fate, but typically the higher-rated series are renewed and the lower-rated ones are cancelled.

Season four resumed last night, after a month’s break, with a pair of episodes. There are five installments remaining and a two-hour finale is expected to air on July 22nd.

There had been some discussion about moving Good Girls to a streaming service but it apparently didn’t work financially.

What do you think? Do you enjoy the Good Girls TV show? Are you sorry to hear that this NBC series won’t be back for a fifth season?

#blackAF: Cancelled; Season Two Renewal for Netflix Series Reversed

A year ago, the #blackAF comedy series was renewed for a second season by Netflix but the decision has now been reversed. Viewers may still see more of the characters, however. The Kenya Barris comedy may become a series of movies on the streaming service, per Deadline. In October, Barris left his $100M deal with Netflix to form BET Studios with ViacomCBS.

The plot of the Netflix series was described this way:

#blackAF, whose end as a series was revealed by Barris in a magazine profile for THR, flips the traditional sitcom family on its head. Pulling back the curtain, it uncovers and explores the messy, unapologetic and often hilarious world of what it means to be a “new money” Black family trying to get it right in a modern world where “right” is no longer a fixed concept.”

Genneya Walton, Iman Benson, Scarlet Spencer, Justin Claiborne, and Ravi Cabot-Conyers starred alongside Barris in the series, which premiered in April 2020.

What do you think? Were you planning to watch season two of #blackAF on Netflix? Would you watch a series of films?

Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!: Cancelled by Netflix; No Season Two for Jamie Foxx Comedy Series

Dad Stop Embarressing Me! TV show on Netflix: canceled, no season 2

(Netflix)

The dad jokes have ended. Netflix has cancelled the Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! TV series so, there won’t be a second season for the family sitcom.

A comedy created by Jamie Foxx and Jim Patterson, Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! was inspired by Foxx’s relationship with his daughter, Corinne. The sitcom stars Foxx, David Alan Grier, Kyla-Drew, Porscha Coleman, Jonathan Kite, and Heather Hemmens.

The story follows Brian Dixon (Foxx), a single dad and businessman from Atlanta who has inherited his mother’s cosmetics company. He must figure out fatherhood on the fly when his strong-minded teenage daughter from Chicago, Sasha (Kyla-Drew), moves in with him.

The first season of eight episodes was released on April 14th. According to Deadline, Foxx was reportedly involved in the decision to end the show. Co-creator Patterson had stepped down as showrunner at the start of production and was replaced by Bentley Kyle Evans.

While we don’t know the show’s viewership numbers (Netflix rarely releases them), we do know that Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! didn’t top the streaming ratings charts. The series also currently has a 49% audience score at Rotten Tomatoes.

What do you think? Have you enjoyed the Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! TV series? Are you disappointed that there won’t be a second season on Netflix?

The Moodys: Cancelled by FOX, No Season Three for Family Comedy Series

The Moodys TV show on FOX: canceled or renewed for season 3?

(Kharen Hill/FOX)

Viewers won’t be spending time with the Moody clan during the 2021-22 TV season. The FOX network has cancelled The Moodys so there won’t be a third season.

A family comedy series, The Moodys stars Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins, Jay Baruchel, Chelsea Frei, and Francois Arnaud. Guests include Maria Gabriela de Faria, Gerry Dee, and Josh Segarra. Based on an Australian TV show, this series revolves around the Moody family of five. They are a tight-knit, though slightly dysfunctional, group and each has his/her own eccentricities. Sean Moody Sr. (Leary) and his wife, Ann (Perkins), are parents of three grown children — the youngest and “creative one”, Dan (Arnaud); overachiever middle-child Bridget (Frei); and Sean Jr. (Baruchel), is the eldest sibling and the “screw-up”. Season two picks up with Sean Sr. contemplating retirement while Sean Jr. takes over the family HVAC business. In reality, however, Ann has no intention of leaving her new psychology practice, and Sean Jr. continues to brew up schemes to get rich quick. Bridget, who is in the midst of a divorce, returns home while her fancy new townhouse is being renovated; and Dan leaves Brooklyn for Chicago to live with his girlfriend, Cora (de Faria), only to realize the relationship is moving too quickly. Once again, the Moodys are all under the same roof as “one big, happy family”

Airing on Thursday and Sunday nights, the second season of The Moodys averages a 0.24 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 964,000 viewers in the live+same day ratings. Compared to season one, that’s down by 51% in the demo and down by 50% in viewership.

The cancellation comes as little surprise. The comedy was drawing low ratings on Thursday nights and then, with three episodes remaining, FOX pulled The Moodys off the air for May sweeps. Two of the remaining installments aired on Sunday, June 6th, and the de facto series finale will run this Sunday, June 20th.

What do you think? Have you enjoyed watching The Moodys TV series on FOX? Would you have tuned in for season three of this FOX comedy?
