U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Advance To World Cup Knockout Round Following Nervy Group Stage Finale

The U.S. Women’s Soccer team survived a late scare to stumble into the World Cup knockout round following a goalless draw against Portugal in their last group-stage game in Auckland, New Zealand.

The game, which was broadcast on Fox, was a crucial tie for the four-time world champions, who needed a draw or win to avoid being booted from the World Cup in the preliminary group stages for the first time in history.

Team USA began their journey for a third straight World Cup title in confident form with a 3-0 win against Vietnam. However, the aging US side seemed to fall off the gas after their opening win, clocking a lackluster draw against the Netherlands and now World Cup debutants Portugal.

The U.S. finished second in Group E with five points — their lowest tally in World Cup history. The Netherlands won the group and finished their preliminary campaign with seven points and a 7-0 win against Vietnam. The only other time Team USA failed to win their World Cup group was in 2011. That year, they transformed in the knockout rounds and turned their slow start into a title appearance against Japan. They ultimately lost that final on penalties.

Team USA now faces a tough road ahead in the knockouts. As the runner-up for Group E, the U.S. will play the winner of Group G, which is currently their frequent rival Sweden. The two teams last met in the opening game of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, which Sweden won 3-0.

Up Here: Cancelled by Hulu; No Season Two for Musical Romantic Comedy Series

Up Here TV Show on Hulu: canceled or renewed?

(Photo: Hulu)

Up Here will not be returning for a second season. Hulu has cancelled the musical romantic comedy series, per TV Line. The eight-episode first season premiered in March.

Starring Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes, with Katie Finneran, John Hodgman, Andréa Burns, Sophia Hammons, Rehanshi Mirza, and Emilia Suárez, the series follows a couple who meet in New York City during the final days of 1999.  Lindsay (Whitman) and Miguel (Valdes) fall in love and discover their most significant obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves. There’s also the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that live inside their heads.

The Hulu series, ordered in February 2022, was written by Steven Levenson (tick, tick…BOOM!, Dear Evan Hansen) and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (The Carmichael Show).  Songwriting duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Frozen, WandaVision) wrote original songs. Thomas Kail (Hamilton) directed and executive produced the series alongside Levenson, Sanchez-Witzel, Anderson-Lopez, Lopez, and Jennifer Todd.

The first season of Up Here wrapped with the couple saying “I love you” to each other on New Year’s Eve.

What do you think? Did you watch this Hulu series? Did you want to see a second season of Up Here, or was one season enough?

Down to Earth with Zac Efron: Cancelled on CW; Network Drops Docuseries After Two Episodes

Down to Earth with Zac Efron TV show on Netflix and The CW: canceled or renewed for season 2?

It looks like Zac isn’t coming back to The CW for a second season — or even the rest of his show’s first. The smallest broadcast network has dropped Down to Earth with Zac Efron show after just two airings.

A documentary series, the Down to Earth with Zac Efron TV show stars actor Zac Efron and wellness expert Darin Olien. The duo travels the world searching for the secrets to good health, a long life, and a higher level of eco-consciousness. Through the adventure and laughs, this travelogue, food odyssey, and eco-warrior series takes the star out of his comfort zone and into the world’s far corners. In the first season, locations include Costa Rica, France, Iceland, Iquitos, Lima, London, Puerto Rico, and Sardinia.

Airing on Tuesday nights, the two episodes of the first season of Down to Earth with Zac Efron averaged a 0.04 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 269,000 viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). It was a middle-of-the-road performer compared to the network’s other summer shows.

The first season was released on Netflix three years ago and on Vice this past spring. The CW’s new management has decided to focus on keeping costs down by airing inexpensive and acquired programming.

Since the network doesn’t own its shows, ratings and ad revenue are very important to the bottom line. As a result, the execs apparently aren’t shy about pulling shows that aren’t measuring up. The CW has also pulled acquired shows Fantastic Friends and Barons in the past month. The latter series’ final episodes were released online, and it seems likely that the remaining installments of Down to Earth will end up there too.

For the immediate future, reruns of Penn & Teller: Fool Us will fill the Mondays at 8 PM timeslot.

What do you think? Have you enjoyed watching the Down to Earth with Zac Efron series on The CW? Are you disappointed that the network has cancelled its future airings?

Sarah Silverman Is “Pissed Off” About Slew Of SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreements For Movies With Stars During Strike, Guild Responds – Update

Actor-comedian Sarah Silverman is confused about the large volume of projects that have been granted interim agreements by SAG-AFTRA to film during the actors strike. And she is not alone.

“I feel f—ing pissed off, and I know I just must not be understanding something. There are like 40 movies being made right now,” Silverman said in a video posted on Instagram Thursday night. “When SAG joined the strike, it’s, ‘Movie stars aren’t making movies for you anymore, now what are you going to do?’ Well, they’re making movies. What the f*ck?”

Deadline’s list, which is being updated daily, features 102 film and TV titles — the vast majority of them movies — that have received permission to shoot since the SAG-AFTRA work stoppage began on July 14, with the casts featuring a number of Oscar winners.

“Movie stars are making movies because they’re ‘independent’ movies, and SAG is allowing it because if they do sell it to streaming, it has to be because streaming is abiding by all the things we’re asking for,” Silverman said. “That’s just working. The strike ends when they come to the table and we make a deal in agreement.”

Siloverman revealed that she too has been offered an indie movie to film during the strike but refused to do it. She said some of her friends started to accept these offers.

“Please, explain to me why I shouldn’t be angry, because people are making real-deal sacrifices,” she said. “People, writers, actors, crew people, all these people are sacrificing their livelihood for this cause. It’s called union strong, where we are all together. And when SAG joined the strike, we should see every movie star out there striking along, because you have insurance because of your union and you get residuals because of your union. All of these things you get because of your union and you can’t stand with your union?”

She scolded both the actors who sign on for the movies with interim agreements and SAG-AFTRA for granting the agreements, which she thinks could “exponentially prolong” the strike.

“I don’t know if I’m mad at these movie stars making these indie movies that are obviously going to go to streaming” or am I mad at SAG for making this interim deal for these indie movies. What the f*ck?”

Deadline has reached out to SAG-AFTRA for comment.

The large number of waivers for movie and TV productions, which is growing daily, is raising eyebrows, especially since a few of the projects have ties to struck companies that are members of the AMPTP.

Some of the high-profile projects that have received interim agreement so far include Apple TV+’s series Tehran; spy drama series The Gray House, produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, which is being distributed internationally by Paramount Global; New Line pickup The Watchers from Ishana Night Shyamalan; Glenn Close’s The Summer Book; Viola Davis’ MRC action thriller G20, which will be distributed by Amazon, as well as A24 titles Mother Mary and Dreams of a Unicorne.

The CW Adds NASCAR XFinity Series To Sports Lineup

The CW is expanding its live sports portfolio with the NASCAR Xfinity Series, composed mainly of young up-and-coming drivers. The network will become the exclusive home to the series beginning in 2025 and extending through the 2031 racing season.

Under the deal, CW will broadcast 33 live NASCAR Xfinity Series races annually, along with practice and qualifying events each weekend. Starting in 2025, for the first time in series history, every NASCAR Xfinity Series race will be available on free, over-the-air broadcast television with additional content available through The CW’s digital platforms. All NASCAR Xfinity Series races and ancillary content will be fully produced by the Emmy-winning NASCAR Productions group, in close collaboration with The CW Network.

The network has been expanding its sports programming, first signaling interest with 100 Days To Indy docuseries, which premiered earlier this year, as well as the deal with Saudi-backed LIV Golf League, the Atlantic Coast Conference for live events, and airing of the Atlantic Coast Conference college football and basketball games through 2026-27.

“Landing the NASCAR Xfinity Series is a game changer for The CW and our CW Sports division and represents another important building block in our programming strategy,” said Dennis Miller, President of The CW. “Live sports are the most watched television content and with The CW’s national reach, moving NASCAR Xfinity Series to The CW will transform and elevate the viewing experience for the series and its fans. The CW has quickly become a destination for sports, as the NASCAR Xfinity Series joins our growing slate of sports programming, including Inside The NFL, ACC college football and basketball, LIV Golf, and the motorsports documentary series 100 Days To Indy. Beginning in 2025, The CW will have 48 weekends per year of live sports programming. With ubiquitous distribution across one of the nation’s five major broadcast networks, NASCAR Xfinity Series races on The CW will deliver more access for fans and far more revenue opportunities for The CW and its affiliates.”

“CW’s leadership shared a compelling vision for cultivating the next generation of NASCAR talent by bringing the NASCAR Xfinity Series exclusively to broadcast television and we are thrilled for the opportunity to partner with them,” added Brian Herbst, SVP, Media and Productions for NASCAR. “With more than one million viewers tuning in each week to see NASCAR’s future stars battle some of its biggest names at our most legendary tracks, NASCAR Xfinity Series consistently delivers the moments that excite current fans and create new fans of our great sport.”
