All Rise Season 3 Episode 9 Review: Truth Hurts

Resentments bubbled over, and truths exploded.

Lola and Robin’s marriage reached a boiling point on All Rise Season 3 Episode 9 when Robin and the FBI tried to stop Mark’s smash-and-grab case.

The misunderstanding soon became a fight of pent-up resentment and accusations.

Wilson Bethel directed ” Truth Hurts,” which dissected secrets in significant relationships, starting with the tension between Robin, Mark, and Lola.

Mark worked for weeks to catch the mastermind behind the smash-and-grab robberies and murders, and he wasn’t giving up easily.

It felt like a betrayal to him that Robin would use the information he overheard in a private conversation and feed it to the FBI.

Mark: Did Lola tell you, or did you overhear us in chambers this morning?
Robin: I was just doing my job.
Mark: I didn’t take you for the type to take advantage of our friendship, let alone your marriage.

This predicament put Lola in an awkward position between her best friend and her husband.

Mark and Lola are each other’s ride-or-die friends, so Lola also felt that Robin betrayed their best friend and put her in the middle of an unnecessary situation.

While their fight initially began about Mark, Lola and Robin soon hurled resentment at each other. All Rise Season 3 has featured many changes, including Robin working from home more. Was that too much of a drastic move?

Robin felt that he gave up his career for Lola and became the primary caregiver for Bailey. It seemed like he expected Lola to be grateful for his sacrifices and jump the second he needed help, which wasn’t fair either.

Robin: I put everything on hold to support your career. Whose the primary caretaker of our child?
Lola: You offered, and if I had known you would resent me for it…
Robin: I’m carrying everything. I’ve been carrying all this. I asked you to take some of it off my shoulders for one day, so I can do my damm job!
Lola: No, not so you can do your job, but so you could backstab our best friend.

He insulted Lola, implying she wouldn’t know their daughter’s needs because she worked so much. That had to hurt since Lola strived to balance motherhood and career.

We never saw this blow-up coming, especially since Robin and Lola recently renewed their vows and had been enjoying more intimate time at home since All Rise Season 3 switched networks to OWN.

However, all of the couples have featured more intrigue and drama, especially theirs, since Lola was tempted by her ex-boyfriend Andre.

After All Rise Season 3 Episode 8, Lola realized that her alternative reality wouldn’t have been better and was determined to make things work with Robin. Robin did not think that included attending a legal conference hosted by Andre.

He played dirty when Lola considered going, only his pettiness didn’t just hurt them but their friends. I don’t blame Lola for making Robin sleep on the couch. He messed up.

This led to the ultimate courtroom showdown when the FBI barged in, demanding they take custody of Brandon Page.

Lola had to make the hardest ruling of her life, deciding to release Brandon to the Feds or keep the smash-and-grab case a local case.

During this dilemma, we saw the strength of Lola and Mark’s friendship as she weighed her options and ultimately chose Mark.

It was pivotal when Lola smiled and nodded at Mark, signaling how much they trusted each other. However, Robin looked angry, so will Lola’s marriage survive that decision?

Mak also dealt with his own relationship issues.

We’ve been waiting for the Mark and Amy wedding for months, but Amy kept playing coy and changing the subject.

Mark seems eager to get married and begin their family, while Amy keeps stalling. He didn’t understand it and seemed more confused after voicing his concerns to Emily.

Mark seemed amicable to meeting Collier and eventually did behind his fiance’s back. Will what he learned come back to bite him?

With Mark overwhelmed, Teddy headed his first big case, a sexual assault case. Besides the women were already comfortable with Mark, Teddy became tongue-tied around the strippers who had been drugged.

Sara: You have done the impossible and earned these women’s trust in the system, and now you’re handing them off to your freshest meat.
Mark: Teddy is the second chair on the case. He’s an excellent attorney. He can handle it.
Teddy: Right. I handle it.
Mark: Great. I’m just a call away. I’ve got to serve a search warrant and find a bulletproof fest. Go get them!

Unfortunately, Teddy made one of the worst mistakes you could during this case. He developed feelings for one of the clients, Eden Porter. Teddy came alive as the two of them discussed Dungeons and Dragons.

He looked like he had formed a connection with Eden, but it almost cost them the case when he objected and screamed at Luke every time he questioned her about her prior drug use.

This made Lola worry about another thing, as she feared that Teddy had become too emotionally involved.

Lola: Mr. Biswas, I just wanted to check in with you. As a former DDA, I myself share your empathetic nature, I can understand that defining the balance between victim and client can be challenging.
Moses: She thinks you have the hots for the stripper.
Teddy: No, of course not. What you saw today was passion, not lust.

Girl power to the rescue. Emily and Sara saved the day with both cases. Emily provided that “Lopez” charm and helped secure a witness for his smash-and-grab case. Seeing their work as a team on the same side was entertaining.

Watching Sara and Emily undercover at the strip club was one of the best parts of the episode. We love their friendship and teamwork; these scenes added much-needed humor to an otherwise serious episode.

They were enjoying watching the dancers in action while Teddy got the actual tea. We need to see more groups going out and partying. It adds some levity.

Poor Teddy was distressed with what he learned at the club. Franklin didn’t only drug Eden, but he raped her multiple times.

It wasn’t the first time Franklin drugged Eden. He sexually assaulted her not once, not twice, but three times at least. I don’t know what to do.

Teddy

We watched Teddy learn one of the hardest lessons of his career.

He had to tell Eden about her assault since she had no memory of it.

She wanted to move on without pressing more charges, while Teddy wanted Franklin to fry.

Sometimes, the hardest thing for an attorney is to let go and make a deal with a scumbag, but he did it, so she wouldn’t have to testify again.

Part of All Rise’s charm is their supporting players. Sherri has always been a favorite, and we’re finally learning more about her.

We’re so happy that Lola and Sherri are friends again and that Lola saw the mysterious postcard. Lola will investigate if anything happens to Sherri.

Several cast members, including Wilson Bethel, have hinted that we’ll see more family members in the second half of All Rise Season 3.

It appears we’ll meet whoever captured Sherri’s mom and her parents soon too. What could their motive be for kidnapping Sherri’s family?

Over to you, All Risers Fanatics. Will Lola and Robin’s marriage survive? Why is Amy playing coy?

Who has Sherri’s mother, and what do they want? Chime in below in the comments.

Remember, if you missed an episode, you could watch All Rise online via TV Fanatic.

All Rise airs at 8/7c on Tuesdays on OWN.

The First Lady Canceled at Showtime

The First Lady is one and done at Showtime.

The premium cabler has canceled the Viola Davis, Gillian Anderson, and Michelle Pfeiffer anthology after one season, according to Deadline.

“Showtime can confirm that the anthology series The First Lady will not be moving forward with another season,” a network spokesperson said in a statement.

“We would like to applaud the artistry and commitment of our showrunner Cathy Schulman, director Susanne Bier, their fellow executive producers, our amazing cast, led by executive producer Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, and our studio partner Lionsgate for their dedicated work in telling the unique stories of three remarkable leaders.”

News of the cancellation is somewhat surprising.

While the show premiered to a tepid response from critics and viewers, it was thought that a renewal with a new story and cast would have been a slam dunk.

Created by Aaron Cooley, the series also featured Kiefer Sutherland, O-T Fagbenle, Aaron Eckhart, Dakota Fanning, and more.

Creatives were vocal about wanting to continue the series as an anthology.

Anderson previously said there is the hope that the series will represent a lot of First Ladies.

“I think the hope is that there’s going to be future seasons so they’ll have the opportunity to have more First Ladies represented. So maybe not just four but maybe 104.”

Showtime had much success with the debuts of Yellowjackets and Dexter: New Blood, so the cabler will be looking ahead to the future with new shows.

The network canceled American Rust after a single season, despite having higher ratings than The First Lady.

Ultimately, that show moved to Amazon’s Freevee.

It’s unclear whether a move to another outlet could step in to pick up The First Lady.

Time will tell.

What are your thoughts on the cancellation?

Roswell, New Mexico Season 4 Episode 8 Review: Missing My Baby

FREE ALEX FROM THE UNDERGROUND!

I will be shouting that until we actually see Alex freed from the underground, which doesn’t happen on Roswell, New Mexico Season 4 Episode 8. Though at least everyone knows he’s missing now, and they even have a lead on his whereabouts.

Small victories, guys. Small victories.

This hour is a little up and down because the forward momentum stalls again in favor of more character work versus plot work, which isn’t bad. It never feels wrong for Roswell to step back from the sci-fi and focus on the relationships, especially when one of the epic pairings of the season hasn’t been as prevalent this season.

Malex were due this episode.

Alex’s disappearance at the end of Roswell, New Mexico Season 4 Episode 2 feels like a long time ago, though in the show’s storyline, it’s only been a few days. And in that time, they’ve been dealing with so many things that you can understand why no one’s spidey senses were tingling when it came to Alex.

They’ve been trying to call him, but it’s clear that they assumed he might not have cell service, and then before they could dwell too long on anything, the next big thing came along to take their focus.

But once Maria and Liz realized that something was wrong, they owed it to Michael to let him know. While a lot of Michael’s anger falls on Max (and rightfully so), it sucks knowing everyone is having these conversations about Michael’s boyfriend and keeping it from him.

And the idea of being afraid of Michael’s reaction is weak at best. Michael only freaks out AFTER he finds out he’s the last one in the know about his boyfriend. Had you perhaps told him right away after what happened at the Crashdown, he would probably be less likely to unload on you all.

Michael’s tendency to push back and push away is a defense mechanism they all know very well. But they should also know that he doesn’t want to be lied to or treated with kids’ gloves.

I adore Liz but hated what she did here, and even more after she justified it by wanting to save Michael from pain. Unfortunately, there is no good time for bad news. Whenever you told Michael, it would hurt, and he would feel like someone ripped his heart and soul out of his body.

But he deserved to know more than anyone else.

All that aside, the actual quest to find Alex starts really strong, giving Michael Vlamis the room to explore so many facets of Guerin over the hour. And he kills every single one.

From the anger directed at everyone from Max to himself that slides into the sadness coupled with relief that comes with feeling Alex communicating with him through song and then the utter devastation that comes with realizing the path to getting your love back means more time apart is played beautifully by Vlamis.

His face can take you on a whole journey in just a few quick beats.

Those big, sweeping emotional moments are somewhat lacking in Roswell, New Mexico Season 4, but they’re everywhere here.

Even though Michael is probably tougher on himself than he needs to be, it’s always nice to hear the acknowledgment regarding what Alex means to him. We know, but it never hurts to remind us. Especially during a season when we haven’t seen one-half of the pairing very much.

Michael: I have to help him! I wasn’t listening to him! I wasn’t paying attention!
Max: You wanna get him back? I need your head and your heart here. Now! Okay? Be the thing that pulls Alex back.

What’s next with the search for Alex (and Dallas and Bonnie) remains to be seen, but at least they have a starting point. They know about the quicksand, and they know there’s something beneath it, but that’s about it.

Traveling down there seems unwise, and Max was right to stop Michael at that moment from leaping because it’s obvious how far out of their depth they are right now. Considering how close we are to the finale, the squad feels woefully unprepared and ignorant of what they’re up against.

It’s feeling like it’s ultimately going to take a combination of those in the underground and everyone else (including potentially reformed Tezca) working in tandem to find a way out.

This doesn’t feel like a scenario where you can go down there and just come back up on some rescue mission. But either way, we’ve got to be close to finding them, right?

I want to say yes, but you can never tell on Roswell how quickly or how long they’ll get to a resolution.

The crew will also probably be dealing with whatever happens to Liz, as she finds herself knocked out by the end of the installment.

But before we get there, let’s back up to everything Liz and Max, which was a hot mess.

For starters, what in the world has happened to them in such a short amount of time? These two went from very in sync to acting like they didn’t know one another on a fundamental level within the blink of an eye.

Is it news that Max is a stubborn person who sometimes has a superiority complex? No. So, why was Liz suddenly so confused by him doubling down on a decision he made and has proclaimed more than once was done to protect her?

Max has shown time and time again this season that all he really wants is to be Liz’s partner in every single way. And he’s pretty much willing to do anything to protect that. It’s why he goes along with Liz’s terrible plan of keeping Alex’s disappearance from Michael because he literally doesn’t want her to be mad at him.

Really think about what that means and what that says about Max, Liz, and their relationship status at that second. Think about what he would do if the roles were reversed and everyone hid something that major about Liz from him while in a committed relationship.

I dare say Max would have reacted just as bad if not worse than Michael!

But he’s not even able to think outside of himself because he’s so committed to the idea of Liz and getting to live that normal life he so often waxes poetic about.

The backslide these two were doing was getting rather nasty, but I can appreciate that they both saw that and decided to talk instead of running away from it. Roswell, New Mexico Season 3 Max and Liz might have done just that. But here, they get honest with one another.

Max’s admitting how lost he feels was a great moment. Max can be very robotic at times, and when he gets a moment of vulnerability, it reminds you that underneath the Max of it all, he’s just trying to find his way like everyone else. Max has a lot of pressure constantly pressing down on him, and he believes he has to have it all together all the time.

But that’s not reality.

The idea of stripping away expectations makes a lot of sense in this scenario, and it takes a burden off Max’s chest for at least the time being.

That burden may come back once he discovers what’s happened to Liz though.

Liz has been playing with fire throughout this whole plot with Shivani. She’s put a lot of trust into a woman she’s only known a few days, and even though their interests have lined up so far, she was incredibly naive to put so much belief and trust in Shivani.

She knows enough to relate to Shivani and sympathizes with her, but she doesn’t know her. Not really. She doesn’t know what motivates her and what makes her tick, and that’s why that final scene between the two seems so inevitable.

Shivani reminds me a lot of old Liz. She sees the vision and the possibilities, and she sees the good that alien science can do, and that’s not unlike something old Liz would have said. Don’t we all remember old Liz using alien science to cure Steph and Kyle telling HER that she was reckless and unethical?

Oh my, how the times have changed.

The bottom line is that Liz pulled Shivani further in, and now she’s got a taste of what this advanced science can do, and she wants more. Now the alien mist was clearly clouding her judgment, but it also felt like a lot of it was from the heart. Why does Liz get to use the alien science when it’s convenient for her, but no one else can?

It’s a fascinating dilemma, and this idea of ethics and what that means has been a pervading theme for Liz, and I like that it’s all coming full circle for her. Inhaling all that mist will probably alter Liz’s brain, assuming she wakes up anytime soon. We could be looking at an unconscious Liz here or maybe even a delusional state.

There are some cool possibilities for where things go next.

The C-plot involved Tezca and Isobel, and what a turn of events! Tezca is still a villain, don’t get me wrong, but you have to see things in a different light. You can’t take away the destruction Tezca left in her wake, but that Tezca was the product of a deranged man.

Isobel: When we were fighting, Tezca told me no matter where in the universe you are, my blade will find you.
Michael: Cause that’s not unsettling at all.

Learning that Tezca was an ally spins things on its head a bit, and it once again positions Jones as forever and always the true villain of this tale. And what’s more intriguing is what Tezca does next, not so much what came before.

It will be all hands on deck to defeat Clyde, who’s multiple steps ahead right now. He has more tools than Tezca ever did and knows what he needs to fulfill Jones’s wishes. So, what does Tezca do next? She helps Isobel here, but how do you unlearn your entire identity?

We went from the dark triad being the main villain to commiserating with Bonnie and Clyde and hating Tezca to now feeling some type of way about Bonnie and Tezca and hating Clyde. In a time where we’re obsessed with good guys and bad guys, it’s cool to see that gray area with characters.

It makes for a much more exciting experience.

Loose Ends

  • I want to call the underground the Upside Down SO bad.
  • Another week without Kyle Valenti! He confessed his love to Isobel and then bounced! Are he and Eduardo STILL road tripping? Or have they made it to their destination? What kind of snack did they bring for the road?
  • I’ve loathed how Mimi’s death has been glossed over, so any time she gets discussed and remembered makes me happy. I loved that Maria followed in her footsteps to help center herself.
  • Would You Come Home making a comeback here in the saddest way possible. Alex making contact with his love via the song he wrote for him was probably one of the most romantic things this show has ever done. We didn’t get Michael and Alex together physically, but that moment was incredibly heartbreaking and beautiful.
  • Speaking of coming home, please come back to me us, Dallas.
  • Speaking of the song, that single tear sliding down Vlamis’s face should be in a museum.
  • Did I miss when Rosa became so knowledgeable in science and alien information?
  • We’ve established that Max shouldn’t have kept the Alex news from Michael, but I’m a sucker for a good brother moment. And Michael breaking down in Max’s arms in front of the quicksand was another moment that stuck you right in the feels.

Alright, we’ve got another cliffhanger here with Liz in danger! What does it mean, and what could happen next?

Let me know what you think is coming up in the comments, along with your feelings about all things Malex and Echo and everything in between!

We only have five more episodes to enjoy before it ends, so please share all your thoughts and watch Roswell, New Mexico online so you can join the conversation!

Days of Our Lives Spoilers for the Week of 8-01-22: What is Rolf Up To?

Salem’s favorite mad scientist is back!

The newly-pardoned Dr. Rolf again teams up with Kristen on Days of Our Lives during the week of 8-01-22, and even she’s shocked by his latest experiment.

Presumably, he intends to resurrect Jake, but there has to be more to it. Could the persistent rumors that Stefan will wake up in Jake’s place be true?

The spoiler video doesn’t provide many clues; it’s the most cryptic one that Days of Our Lives has had for ages.

Kristen does look shocked as Rolf pulls back the curtain on his latest experiment, so it’s safe to assume that he does something other than resurrecting Jake.

That’s too bad. Rolf’s anti-death drug is a silly plot device, but this is one time it would have come in handy. Jake and Ava had potential as a couple, and it would be nice for her to get a happy ending for once.

If Jake were to come back to life, it would negate the fake-widow plot that Ava and Gabi are cooking up as they prepare to go to war with EJ, rendering that whole thing pointless. If anyone can go toe-to-toe with EJ and come out on top, it’s Ava, so let’s go!

Anyway, if Jake is still dead, what is Rolf up to?

There are several potential scenarios here, all of which put Days of Our Lives squarely in the silly category with this story.

Most likely, Rolf somehow saved Stefan’s essence and will somehow implant it into Jake’s body. Even Rolf couldn’t resurrect Stefan because Stefan’s heart is in Julie’s body!

He tried this before when he implanted a Stefano microchip into Steve’s brain and a Gina microchip into Hope’s. Eventually, it was reversed when Kayla removed the chips.

If Rolf uses a microchip or similar technology, could Jake eventually be restored to his Jake identity? Or will Rolf have perfected the tech so that it’s now irreversible?

The jury’s still out on that. In the meantime, if you don’t like the supernatural/wacky science stuff, don’t panic! We have eight spoilers below for Days of Our Lives during the week of 8-01-22; please scroll down to check them out.

Orpheus has a surprising request for Marlena.

Theoretically, nobody should be giving Orpheus the time of day, especially not Marlena, who he kidnapped and tormented decades ago.

However, Marlena may have a soft spot for Orpheus’ kids — after all, he forced her to be their new mother back in the day.

So if Orpheus’ favor has to do with helping Evan, Marlena may agree. Similarly, if he asks her to be his therapist so he can be a better dad to his wayward son, that may be the perfect way to manipulate her into a ‘Yes.’

Shawn and Evan wait for the results of the paternity test.

It’s a no-brainer: Evan will be shown to be the father. Where would the drama be if Shawn could easily get rid of Evan and his paternity claim, after all?

But since DNA tests get switched regularly, can anyone trust that this is the true result?

Shawn won’t give custody up without a fight, and Evan isn’t above kidnapping the baby because he’s too impatient to wait for this to work through the courts. Anything could happen once the test is done.

Gabi is thrown by Ava’s unexpected demands.

Gabi still hasn’t figured out that she cannot outscheme Ava.

It was never smart for her to make an enemy out of her, and now she’s put herself in a position where Ava can get the better of her.

Gabi will probably have to do some groveling, and that’s just for openers. She shouldn’t have approached Ava about Jake’s shares at Dimera before his body was cold.

Kristen watches anxiously as Rolf tries to work his magic.

As discussed above, even Kristen appears shocked by Rolf’s plan.

He must be cooking up something truly bizarre for it to throw her off.

Even resurrecting Stefan seems too easy — what’s the twist in this?

Shawn turns to Belle for help.

Shawn probably wants to file for custody.

That might be a hard sell, especially after the Jan rift and Belle’s mixed feelings about raising Jan’s baby.

But let’s hope they’re on the same side this time! It’s more enjoyable than having them be at each other’s throats.

EJ calls Ava’s bluff.

EJ didn’t believe this convenient “we were just married” story, nor should he.

EJ is more Ava’s speed as an opponent than Gabi. She’ll most likely take his refusal to buy into this story as a challenge.

This could be fun!

Jada asks Eric out on a date.

Jada/Eric is probably a distraction on the way to an Eric/Nicole reunion.

That’s unfortunate since Eric and Nicole have already crashed and burned too many times to count. It’s time to move on.

However, these two may be a cute couple for as long as it lasts. Eric’s support after Jada shot the mugger was a nice change of pace from his judgmentalism when it comes to Nicole.

Xander and Sarah search for clues in order to prove who murdered Abigail.

The Salem PD likes to throw darts at a list of names and hope they find the right person. It usually takes them four or five tries.

Sarah’s freedom, sanity, and relationship with Xander hang in the balance here,

She and Xander are going to take matters into their own hands instead. Good for them.

Johnny coerces Paulina into helping him.

Seriously? Paulina was kind enough to buy Johnny a drink to commiserate.

She liked him better for Chanel than she did Allie, but if he starts trying to manipulate her, that could change in a heartbeat.

I wish we would move on past this awful triangle already. It’s not doing anyone any favors.

Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek’s Uhura, Dead at 89

Sad news out of Hollywood as it has been announced that legendary actress, Nichelle Nichols, has died.

She was 89.

Nichols was best known for her role as Uhura on the original Star Trek series, a role she held for the entire series.

The actress starred alongside William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy on that series.

She and Shatner shared the first kiss between a white person and a Black person on television.

Nichols considered leaving the series after its first season, prompting Martin Luther King Jr. to ask her to stay.

He told her she was a role model for Black children.

“He told me that Star Trek was one of the only shows that his wife Coretta and he would allow their little children to stay up and watch,” Nichelle recalled.

“I thanked him and I told him I was leaving the show. All the smile came off his face and he said, ‘You can’t do that. Don’t you understand, for the first time, we’re seen as we should be seen? You don’t have a Black role. You have an equal role.’”

“I went back to work on Monday morning and went to Gene’s office and told him what had happened over the weekend. And he said, ‘Welcome home. We have a lot of work to do.’ ”

Whoopi Goldberg, who played Guinan on Star Trek: The Next Generation, remembered telling her family upon first watching Star Trek: “I just saw a Black woman on television, and she ain’t no maid!”

Nichols did not return for the Star Trek reboot, with Zoe Saldana taking over the iconic role.

The character currently appears on Paramount+ drama Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, with Celia Rose Gooding taking over the role.

That show is set well before the original series, and has already been renewed for a second season.

Nichelle’s son, Kyle Johnson, shared news of his mother’s passing on Facebook.

“Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration,” he wrote Sunday.

“Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nichols died in Silver City, New Mexico. She had been living with her son and was recently hospitalized.

May Nichelle Nichols rest in peace.
