The Great: Cancelled, No Season Four for Hulu Period Dramedy Series

(Photo: Hulu)

The Great has been cancelled after three seasons on Hulu, per Deadline. The 10-episode third season arrived on the streaming service in May.

Created by Tony McNamara, the period dramedy series follows the life of Catherine the Great, who ruled during the late 1700s in Russia. Starring Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow, the series’ third season follows Catherine (Fanning) and her husband (Hoult) as they try to repair their troubled marriage.

Hulu gave no reason for the cancellation of the well-received series. During its run, The Great received numerous award nominations, including nominations for an Emmy, a SAG, a Critics Choice, an Independent Spirit Award, and two Golden Globe nominations for Fanning. The series took home the Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in 2022.

SPOILER ALERT. Fortunately for viewers, The Great didn’t end with a big cliffhanger. Following the death of Peter, she pushes through her grief and comes out the other side stronger. The series ends with Catherine having grown as a ruler. She dances with newfound confidence and a  shorter hairstyle.

What do you think? Are you sad to hear that this series has been cancelled and will not return for a fourth season on Hulu? Did you want to see more of this story?

Lucasfilm’s Jacqui Lopez (Executive Producer), James Waugh (Executive Producer), Josh Rimes (Executive Producer), and Qubic Pictures’ Justin Leach (Co-Executive Producer) and Kanako Shirasaki (Producer) were on hand at the event to reveal each studio and give fans a special look at the environment and concept art as they debuted the title and first details of each short.

Kamikaze Douga – The Duel

All episodes of “Star Wars: Visions” will be released on Disney+ September 22, 2021.

The Idol: Cancelled by HBO; No Season Two for Controversial Drama Series

The Idol TV show on HBO: canceled or renewed for season 2?

HBO is done with the world of The Idol. The cable channel has cancelled the drama series so there won’t be a second season. The first season of five episodes finished airing in early July.

A drama series, The Idol TV show stars Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Lily-Rose Depp, and Troye Sivan with Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Ramsey, Suzanna Son, and Hank Azaria. In the story, Jocelyn (Depp) is a young up-and-coming pop idol who’s under tremendous pressure. She had a mental breakdown during her previous concert tour, derailing her career. Jocelyn’s determined to claim what she believes to be her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. As she preps for her triumphant return, a leaked photo sends her and her team into crisis mode. Her passion for music is rekindled when she meets Tedros (Tesfaye), a nightclub tycoon with a history marked by scandal. He’s also a self-help guru and the leader of a contemporary cult.

Airing on Sunday nights, the first season of The Idol averaged a 0.03 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 164,000 viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). It was one of HBO’s lowest-rated shows in recent months and also drew mostly negative reviews.

Though some assumed that The Idol was a limited series, HBO had been considering a second season renewal until recently. Another season could have focused on a different story but the cable channel has decided to move on.

The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”

What do you think? Have you enjoyed The Idol TV series on HBO? Are you disappointed to hear this drama wasn’t renewed for a second season?

Kevin Costner Takes Stand In Divorce Battle, Explains ‘Yellowstone’ Fallout

Kevin Costner Addresses ‘Yellowstone’ Exit At Divorce Hearing, Says He Will “Probably Go To Court” Over It

Kevin Costner’s shocking exit from the biggest show on linear television, Paramount Network’s Yellowstone, became a focal point in the Oscar winner’s testimony at a Santa Barbara court hearing in his divorce case Friday morning.

In Costner’s first public remarks about his abrupt departure and the series coming to an end with Season 5, the actor indicated on the stand today that he will likely sue over the way things went down.

During his testimony today, Costner openly said he will “probably go to court” over his Yellowstone exit, according to multiple reports and sources. If Costner was to engage in a suit over his Yellowstone departure, the defendants likely would be producers 101 Studios and Paramount Network parent company Paramount Global.

Responding to a further question by his estranged wife Christine Baumgartner’s attorney John Rydell as to whether he was offered to do Season 6, Costner also said it was “complicated,” according a Fox News report on the hearing, with the actor’s comments corroborated to Deadline by sources close to the matter.

“We did negotiate,” Costner said, noting that he was offered $24 million to do Seasons 5, 6 and 7. “There were issues about creative,” he said about talks with franchise creator Taylor Sheridan and producers. “I tried to break the logjam. They walked away.”

Costner actually was paid for the fifth season of Yellowstone, which only has filmed the first half of that cycle’s episodes so far. Based on his compensation, it seems the $24 million the actor was referring to today in court was for the sixth and seventh seasons only.

As Deadline reported exclusively in February, the crux of the issues involved disagreements between the producers and Costner over shooting schedules. Sources told Deadline at the time that the actor, who originally had limited himself to 65 days of shooting on Yellowstone, only wanted to shoot 50 days for the first part of Season 5.

For the second batch of episodes, Season 5B, which is yet to be shot and now will mark the mothership’s final chapter, Costner only wanted to spend a week shooting.

Costner, who won Best Actor in a Drama Series at the Golden Globes in January for Yellowstone, is directing and starring in the multi-part Western epic Horizon, which he co-wrote with Jon Baird. The film, which is set up at Warner Bros and New Line, is currently in postproduction.

“Somewhere along the line, they wanted to change things,” Costner said in the courtroom today. “They wanted to do 5A and 5B; [it] affected Horizon. I was going to do my movie Horizon and leave that show, do my movie, then do B. A show I was only doing once a year I was now doing twice.”

Paramount announced in May that Yellowstone will end with Season 5B and will be followed by an untitled sequel from series’ creator Sheridan and production companies 101 Studios and MTV Entertainment Studios.

It is unclear whether the actor, who is also an executive producer on Yellowstone, is serious about filing a wrongful-termination lawsuit or if this is part of legal maneuverings during his increasingly acrimonious divorce proceedings.

Yellowstone producers had no comment on Costner’s courtroom remarks. However, sources noted that the star essentially made himself “unavailable” to the show, which would complicate his legal position with regard to his contractual obligations.
