Now he has revealed that he was “afraid” to appear in the 2017 documentary The Trouble With Apu, where Indian comedian Harry Kondabolu called out all the problems with the depiction, including the real life mockery of Indian people it had helped perpetuate.
“I was really freaked out,” Azaria revealed on the NPR podcast Code Switch, which also had Kondabolu as a guest, explaining why he turned down the offer to appear in the doc. “I don’t know if I would have felt safe to have the conversation privately, let alone roll them, you know, we’re going to record it.”
Azaria added that he was grateful for the comedian to have brought him to the topic, saying, “I’m so grateful for having – for Hari, you pushing – dragging me and pushing me…into this conversation.”
Kondabulu answered, “It means a lot for you to say that.”
Azaria told the podcast that, while he still found the documentary personally embarrassing, he understood that it was “a drop in the ocean compared to what [Kondabolu] went through.
“Through my role in Apu and what I created in the Hollywood messaging…I helped to create a pretty marginalizing, dehumanizing stereotype.”
Azaria revealed he hadn’t realized how many people took issue with Apu until after watching the doc.
“It’s symbolic of a much larger dynamic. If nothing else, watching the doc, I was like: ‘Oh, I admire all these performers. A character I did – I, like, hindered them? I caused them pain? I actually actively made their path harder? That sucks.’”
Now, we’ve been here, done this before. Every season the authorities look like they’re well on their way to putting Tariq or someone in his family away for life, and in a last-minute hail mary, they find a way to blow it all up.
But with so many moving pieces, from Tariq and Brayden to Davis and now Diana, I wonder if they’ve finally run out of luck.
Tariq always knew there was heat on him coming off Power Book II: Ghost Season 2, but once Noma stuck her claws into him and everyone else, he had no choice but to get back in the game.
Finding out Lauren was alive has certainly had his head spinning because it’s made him realize how out of control and out of his depth he really was.
The FEDs have been building their case slowly and methodically, and while it seemed to stall for a while, they’ve finally hit their stride, as each new body that dropped made the connections they needed to prove that much easier.
Finally linking all the various drug streams together really sealed the deal here, and they made the smart play by going after Diana, whom they have on camera and whose arrest will most likely cause the most chaos.
Right now, Jenny has Lauren and Saxe, and now she has Diana, the most far-removed from things, and whom the family will be fighting like hell to protect.
It’s hard to imagine Diana would ever go against her family, but we’ve also never seen her in this kind of situation. She wanted out, and she thought she was out, and now she’s the one out of everyone facing the heat?
What would you do in that situation?
Aside from having Diana now, Jenny and Blanca still have Lauren and Saxe in their back pockets as well.
Lauren is funny because she sat around for however long, just imagining the absolute worst of Tariq, and this tale Jenny weaved about Tariq being a monster wasn’t just born out of thin air.
Tariq is a monster. He’s a stone-cold killer who will do whatever he must to keep himself safe.
You have to love Tariq immediately placing the blame on others when Lauren called him out for his selfishness because that’s what he does. There is always a justification and an excuse, which goes back to when he was a teenager.
Was he raised in a horribly toxic environment and lied to repeatedly by those who were meant to protect him? Yes. We’ve gone over that in lengthy detail over the years. But has Tariq also had ample opportunities to make better decisions for himself? Of course, he has.
The person Tariq is right now, as an adult man who wakes up every morning choosing violence, is solely on Tariq. And the current situation he’s found himself in isn’t something he can blame on anyone else but himself.
Tariq and Lauren lowkey working together wasn’t a shock because Lauren still wants to see whatever good she can find in Tariq. It’s like she knows he’s terrible and understands he has done many horrific things, but he didn’t try to kill her.
There’s only so much Lauren will be able to do at this point, and the second it’s revealed she’s alive, that “partnership” between everyone and Cane will be blown the hell up.
Speaking of Cane, he found himself back at Monet’s side, begrudgingly, and the Tejada family was in all kinds of disarray.
Lorenzo’s death has left a void in the family, even if everyone has moved on like nothing’s happened.
Lorenzo was the de facto leader, and now Monet was ready to make a stand again to step right into the empty leadership role, even though it’s pretty clear that Dru and Cane have a much greater grasp on what’s going on.
Monet has been so far removed from everything she didn’t know about Lauren wearing a wire or what the deal was with Noma. But even though she was entirely out of the loop, she was ready to end the war with the Russians.
Monet has always seen the bigger picture and used the pieces around her in the best way for her. Cane has always been her muscle, and she’s used Tariq as her brains.
And they both stepped up to the plate here, with Tariq helping set the ceasefire in motion and Cane delivering that fatal blow to Kai and bringing the whole thing home.
Deading the Russian war was a win for everybody, and killing Kai was a win for Monet because she could also get rid of a new threat.
Gordo did the most when he spoke with Monet, mainly because he knew he had the upper hand. What was Monet going to do?
Well, nothing at that moment, but she did concoct a much larger plan that involved breaking her son’s heart.
Poor Dru can’t catch a break.
He thought he found his forever in Everett, who was never the one for him. And then Gordo waltzed in, and the two of them fit. At the very least, Dru could always be himself with Gordo, and it’s no wonder he fell hard for the idea of what they could be.
Dru: I don’t know. I feel like we could be something, me and him. Is that crazy? Monet: No crazier than your father and me. We built a life together. You could too. But remember, just because you and Gordo are on the same page, doesn’t mean his family is.
Monet playing in his face and acting like she was happy for him was typical Monet, who might somehow be a bigger sociopath than James St. Patrick ever was.
Her idea to pair Kai and Gordo up depended on many different things breaking her way, and she’s lucky that Kai didn’t get the drop on her and she was able to find the time to plant that burner phone on him.
I wish Dru had taken a moment to consider all the facts, but no one in the Terjada family is known for their patience or ability to separate emotions from their decisions.
Dru felt so unbelievably blindsided and hurt, knowing that the man he was ready to truly allow himself to fall for was capable of such a deception. I can understand the pain he must have felt, but you’d think he would have wanted to gather a little information before he shot him dead.
Gordo’s death helps Monet, as he was seemingly the only one to know her secret, but now what does this do for that fragile truce between them and the Castillos?
Gordo was the only one keeping the peace between the two families, and his death will not only be suspicious to them, but it will splinter the business. And with Diana jammed up and Noma roaming around, they don’t need anything else to worry about.
Saxe better worry about his safety now that it’s known he’s working for the FEDs.
Davis has always kept Saxe at arm’s length while also allowing him to see entirely too much. There’s no way he’s ever trusted Saxe, but at the same time, he’s allowed him to get too close to his business.
Saxe doesn’t know much, but he does know enough to do damage.
It’s only a matter of time before Davis knows Saxe has been playing him, and the fallout from that should be rather delicious.
Davis better act quickly if Saxe is still Diana’s lawyer like he was after Lorenzo’s death. Diana is liable to get them all in bigger trouble than they’re already in if she confides in him, not realizing he’ll be taking it right back to Jenny.
There is so much going on right now, and we’ve only got a few more hours to get it all sorted.
I think we can all agree that before the season ends, the body count will increase, the betrayals will continue, and Tariq will find a way to survive it all.
He always finds a way.
Everything Else You Need To Know
Tariq and Brayden being on the outs is more depressing than I thought. There’s something about those two beefing that feels unnatural.
Tate standing in front of the docks and taking credit for the Russian drug bust is so on-brand for him. He’s had very little purpose this season, but I still enjoy him every time he does show up.
Salim is the definition of toxic. The man writes a lackluster poem, begging for forgiveness, and when Diana is unimpressed, he immediately starts degrading her and blackmails her. But he should have known better than to come at a Tejada like that.
Wow, do I not care about Weston Holdings being a Ponzi scheme, but I am interested in how Brayden can use this information to his benefit. At the very least, he’s got to find a way to get Tariq and the Tejada’s money out of there.
Cane was swooping in on Effie and coming on thick. Effie seemed to be falling for it, mostly because she’s upset about Tariq, but those two together and against Tariq next season would be something else.
Effie continuously calling people out for being weak is bold when I’ve seen Tariq kill more people than she has. I wonder if the best course of action one day was to kill Tariq if she could go through with it.
Theo turning his back on Davis because he didn’t get him out the right way. It felt like they wanted us to think this story was over, but I feel it’s just starting.
Tariq is about to go off the rails now that he knows a RICO case is looming, so the next few hours should be extra tense as the scrambling begins!

James Corden‘s run on the ‘Late Late Show’ has officially come to an end, after a week of special moments and tributes to the show’s 8-year run on CBS.
An emotional Corden teared up Thursday night as he signed off for the final time from behind a piano, a fitting end as music was such an integral part of his show for so many years — from “Carpool Karaoke” to surprise musical guests.
CBS
Speaking of surprise guests — President Biden made an appearance on the show with a special message to the host congratulating him on an incredible run.
CBS
Will Ferrell was there too, providing some hilarious comedic relief when he took a sledgehammer to Corden’s desk … smashing it to pieces as James and Harry Styles looked on from only feet away.
Ferrell and Styles also played the show’s last round of the popular segment “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” — with foods like bull penis and salmon, clam juice and wasabi.
CBS
As for Styles, One Direction fans were likely glad to hear him talk a bit about his former boy band during the segment. When asked about a possible reunion, Styles told the host, “I think I would never say never to that. If there was a time when we wanted to do it, I don’t see why we wouldn’t.”
First released earlier this week, James also played his final “Carpool Karaoke” segment with Adele.
While it may be the end of an era for Corden and late-night TV, there’s plenty of buzz he’ll be just fine moving forward.
Suge Knight says his upcoming TV series will portray his version of the truth about how some of Death Row’s biggest records were made … allegedly without Dr. Dre‘s involvement.
Suge tells TMZ Hip Hop … Daz Dillinger‘s latest interview — where he claimed he got $2.5 mil out of Suge — is just Daz “running his mouth.” However, he has his own story to tell about Daz, alleging Dre convinced Tha Dogg Pound producer to sign over rights to Snoop Dogg‘s classic “Doggystyle” album.
As everyone knows, Dre is credited with producing that iconic project, but Suge claims it was really Daz who ghost-produced it.
Waiting for your permission to load Spotify album.
Speaking from a CA state penitentiary, Suge told us the record distributor wanted Dre’s name on Snoop’s debut album for visibility purposes. That record came after Dre’s legendary “The Chronic,” so having him produce would be a huge boost for “Doggystyle.”
Suge claims he advised Daz to reject Dre’s proposed buyout … but Daz went through with it anyway. We reached out to Daz for his side, but haven’t heard back.
Suge says his version of the “Doggystyle” backstory is what viewers will see in the upcoming BLK Prime TV series chronicling his life. He also assured Daz his DGPC twin Kurupt will get some shine for being a ferocious MC in the violent Death Row era.
TMZ.com
Suge, who’s doing 28 years for voluntary manslaughter, takes umbrage with how another blockbuster record in Dre’s catalog, “California Love,” was depicted in 2015’s “Straight Outta Compton.”
The Oscar-winning film shows Dre and Tupac Shakur organically creating the 1996 hit collab in-studio, but Suge alleges he actually orchestrated the song’s creation … because Pac and Dre were beefing at the time.
He credits DJ Quik for thinking up the song’s iconic chorus when at the infamous 1995 Source Awards in NYC, and he later recruited the late Roger Troutman to sing the phrase on his voicebox.
Suge cosigned on veteran rapper J-Flexx‘s claims he penned Dre’s verses for the classic tracks “Keep Their Heads Ringin’,” “Natural Born Killaz” and, of course, “California Love.”
He claims ‘California’ sat around for 5 years until he, not Dre, introduced Pac to the beat. Again, Suge says all of these behind-the-scenes allegations will play out in his biopic-styled TV series.
Canada has brought its Online Streaming Act into law after years of heated debate.
The key impact of Bill C-11 is that streamers such as Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ will now be regulated by similar laws to those overseeing the country’s networks.
In practice, the streaming services are now required to “contribute to the creation and availability of Canadian stories and music” and “pay their fair share in supporting Canadian artists, just like traditional broadcasters,” as per government bill guidelines issued last year. Canadian networks are compelled to hit certain quotas to fulfil terms of their licenses.
Should streamers fail to comply, local regulator the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) can impose fines and other penalties.
The bill passed a final hurdle in the Senate yesterday and received royal assent, meaning it is now Canadian law.
The new law has created passionate supporters and detractors since Justin Trudeau’s government first introduced the plan, with YouTube among the organizations to voice disapproval from a business perspective. Some Canadians claim it represents censorship but the government says the key elements are targeted at commercial companies and do not apply to individuals creating content online.
The government says the bill will “create more opportunities for Canadian producers, directors, writers, actors, and musicians to create high quality audio and audiovisual content,” give audiences easier access to Canadian and Indigenous stories, and creates “one fair set of rules for all comparable broadcasters — online or on traditional media.”
Canada’s broadcasting infrastructure has broadly been designed to protect Canadian English- and French-language heritage and to build an ecosystem of tightly regulated commercial, public and specialty networks. However, the last changes to the Broadcasting Act before this week were in 1991, well before streaming services had risen.
International streamers to this point have, to an extent, operated outside the existing system. Netflix, for example, has chosen to invest huge amounts in local production as a way of paying its way, but is broadly against regulation and quotas in the local territories where it operates.
Streamers are also facing similar regulation in Australia, where the government is planning to introduce content quotas as part of its five-year ‘Revive’ National Cultural Policy. The EU already imposes 30% local content quotas on streamers — most reach or exceed that target.
The UK has also been tightening rules on SVoDs, and can now fine them if their content violates fairness, accuracy or privacy principles. Yesterday, Netflix’s UK Head of Policy Benjamin King said the plans could “prove unworkable or risk a chilling effect” on the streamer’s appetite for making docs in the country.
Netflix’s biggest Canadian originals include Anne with an E, which was co-produced with CBC. The streamer was hailed with the global success of CBC Comedy series Schitt’s Creek, whose popularity exploded after it was added to service internationally.
Tucker Carlson is out at Fox News, and now another conservative news outlet, Newsmax, wants him to be more than just the face of the network, and it’s putting on a full-court press to land him.
Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ … the news channel is doing everything it can to sweeten the deal for Tucker to come on board — including floating the idea of letting him program the whole channel, not just his own show.
That would be a pretty enticing deal point … in addition to having his own primetime show, Tucker would have a say over what shows lead into and out of his show, which can be key in achieving bigger TV ratings.
While our sources stress Newsmax hasn’t formally offered Tucker a job — he can’t have formal discussions due to his current Fox News contract — we’re told the network execs have made it clear to people around him, they would basically give him a big say in rebranding their channel.
Newsmax has some competition for Tucker … as we first reported, NewsNation is showing early interest as well.
Our sources acknowledge it’s too early to know for sure where Tucker will pop up next, and it might not even be at a TV network … but we’re told whatever he does, it’s going to be big, disruptive, and will create a seismic shift in the conservative media landscape.
In the meantime, we’re told he’s cheerful following his Fox News firing … and he’s not dwelling on what he lost, but instead moving forward and hoping FNC does the same.
Jerry Springer and his family chose to keep his cancer battle hidden from the public so his health struggle wouldn’t become a burden to many of those who cared so deeply about him … TMZ has learned.
Jene Galvin, a rep for the Springer family, tells us Jerry was sick for months, running through a series of tests, but only recently found out just how dire his pancreatic cancer diagnosis actually was.
Galvin says Jerry’s always been a fairly private person, but he and his family thought it was especially important to keep his cancer private, as they didn’t want to worry other people. Instead, Jerry’s family shifted their entire focus to aiding with his care, which became extremely time-consuming.
We’re told Jerry knew his time was limited — given the severity and type of cancer — so he made a point to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible.
Jene says there was only a small circle of people outside of family — including Jene and Jerry’s friend Louis Beck — who knew about the cancer.
TMZ.com
As we first told you, Jerry’s longtime friend and partner on TV, Steve Wilkos, told us he and Jerry shared a cigar and some memories about a month ago. Steve says he had no idea Jerry was sick, but looking back on the moment — he believes it was Jerry’s way of saying goodbye.
While Jene tells us Jerry had not designated a specific organization he wanted fans to donate to after his death, he believes a place like The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is doing good work toward finding a cure.
