The Witcher: Blood Origin Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Of Mages, Malice, and Monstrous Mayhem

Three battles come to their respective climaxes on The Witcher: Blood Origin Season 1 Episode 4.

There is a mage battle, a monster battle, and… well, Merwyn.

And while the good guys win, nothing is ever simple when the stakes are this high. Seanchai leaves Jaskier with directions to spread the Song of the Seven. How this will affect the elves of his world, only time (and The Witcher Season 3) will tell.

The most obvious and dangerous antagonist in this multi-faceted conflict is unquestionably Chief Sage Balor.

His obsession with opening gateways using the monoliths has stripped the land of its vitality. His impulsive purging (i.e., killing) of uncooperative mages means crops are failing and water has dried up. The people suffer.

Furthermore, the monoliths are also tearing the fabric of the universe. Zacaré and Syndril’s mission is to destroy the master monolith in the Xin’trean palace.

Of course, their timing sucks, and Balor strolls back into our dimension just before they reach the monolith, now the master of god-like powers of Chaos.

Their battle is the typical wizard duel, Syndril’s sparks warring with Balor’s fireballs. Ironically, Zacaré and Syndril might not have been able to destroy the monolith on their own.

With a final touch, the great mage shattered his greatest creation, not realizing the energy released would shatter space and time itself. The fragile veils between worlds had been ripped apart. Planes of existence began to cross. Skies warred with skies. Night fed upon day. Multiple worlds crossed through each other, scattering species like seeds as they merged. This was the Conjunction of the Spheres. Every living thing fell silent.

Seanchai

With Balor in play, Syndril’s idea to combine his own magic with Balor’s to shatter the monolith proves successful, although it doesn’t save the world from the Conjunction of the Spheres.

So, we now know that the Conjunction that brought monsters and man to The Continent was the only alternative to the total annihilation of the world by the power of the monoliths.

Before the transformed Fjall can fight Balor’s Chaos beast, he first faces his past as Merwyn asks him to return to her side despite her complicity in assassinating her brother and her active role in killing his entire family.

I knew everyone that I loved would die, and I said yes. Without a second breath. I was going to be a footnote in someone else’s story. I was a fertile thing to be traded. I was unseen, Fjall!

Merwyn

Fjall fights off his inner monster long enough to tell her off.

His battle with the beast is almost as epic.

But once the Chaos beast within him is out, there’s no reversing the transformation.

Poor Uthrok. He was a very entertaining addition to the ensemble.

I guess the Lark owes him a song.

Uthrok: If I fall, you owe me a song, and I want both me stones in it.
Éile: Uthrok Mighty Cock. He who had two enormous balls that slew an empire!
Uthrok: Hark that Lark!

Speaking of Éile, her confrontation with Merwyn is as much symbolic as it is physical.

It’s quite the elegant resolution to the conflict that began with the coup that murdered the three Continental monarchs and their royal protectors.

Éile has ostensibly been on a mission ever since to kill Merwyn and her supporters in retribution for the murder of the Raven Clan.

But along the way, Éile realizes that the fight isn’t between her and Merwyn; it’s between the lowborns and those in power.

Merwyn: Everything I have done has been for elfkind, and I will not apologize for that, Lark.
Éile: You’ve no idea what elfkind even is. You’re just another spoiled princess.
Merwyn: I am Empress!
Éile: You are a child given the reins of a warhorse. You don’t speak for elfkind.
Merwyn: What, and you do?
Éile: They speak for themselves now.

There are similarities between Éile and Merwyn, as the Empress points out at the outset of their encounter. They’ve both taken paths other than the one planned for them.

They’ve both loved Fjall.

But if the writers were looking for us to feel sympathy for Merwyn’s plight, that emotional load didn’t land.

And although Uthrok was no prophet, he’d seen enough uprisings to know the lowborns would never be able to keep control over their own lives.

You’re a lovely looking uprising. Enjoy your freedom while it lasts. Oh, by the way, they have peaches in the kitchen.

Uthrok

Éile’s final message to Merwyn is a gift of choice.

It’s the choice that every dictator is offered at the end of their regime. Fight on, or give up.

You want to control your own story. I’ve given you a choice. Leave the blade as it is, and a physic might find you. Save you. You’ll live long enough to watch your world crumble around you. Face your wrongs. Or pull it out and bleed to death a coward. No one will know. No one but you.

Éile

Merwyn’s decision is rather bizarre. She hangs on long enough to return to her throne and don her crown again.

Then just as the lowborns storm the palace, she pulls out her blade. Dying as Empress for an audience.

As an audience, we know that in twelve hundred years, elfkind will be hounded and persecuted by humans as elves did to dwarves.

There’s a cycle to power shifts, and in the time of Geralt and Yennefer and Ciri, monster numbers will have dwindled by humans will have exploded in population and ambition.

It all begins here with the deaths of Balor and Syndril, Merwyn and Fjall.

This is the time of Ithlinne, who will one day prophesy Ciri’s path and the world’s end.

This is the time of The Lark, whose songs will inspire and whose blood will carry salvation.

These events will give rise to the Wild Hunt that Eredin will lead and Avallac’h will evade.

The Witcher: Blood Origin gives a glimpse into the past to contextualize the events that would only postpone the end of days for The Continent.

The question remains how the Song of the Seven will affect the elves who listen to The Sandpiper’s words. Will it be enough to stem the oncoming dangers?

To put the responsibility for the world’s survival on the shoulders of Jaskier and his songs is an enormous burden.

Who is the last of the Lark and Fjall’s line?

Did Zacaré and Brother Death live long lives together? Did Meldof find a glorious battle in which to die and join Gwen?

What happens to Scían?!?

The Witcher: Blood Origin may have served its purpose in seeding future main plotlines in The Witcher, but it does a disservice in introducing some characters that we are not ready to let go to the mists of history.

BBC Drops ‘Doctor Who’ Teaser Trailer With David Tennant, Catherine Tate & Ncuti Gatwa Ahead Of 2023 Premiere

A new season of Doctor Who is coming in 2023 and the BBC dropped a teaser trailer as a holiday gift to fans. Ncuti Gatwa is the Fifteenth Doctor but before he makes his appearance, David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor returns, now as the Fourteenth Doctor after Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor made her exit.

In the preview, Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble appears feeling some sort of way.

“Sometimes, I think there’s something missing,” she says. “Like I had something lovely and it’s gone.”

Tennant’s Doctor emerges saying, “I don’t know who I am anymore.”

Donna Noble is seemingly in danger as the Fourteenth Doctor says that if she ever remembers him “she will die.”

Gatwa’s presence comes at the end of the teaser asking, “Will someone tell me what the hell is going on here?”

Showrunner Russell T. Davies teased the upcoming season in a statement earlier this year saying, “If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way! The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun! And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!”

Neil Patrick Harris is also part of the new season of Doctor Who.

Doctor Who made its debut in 1963 and in 2023 is celebrating 60 years since the show began airing.

Yellowjackets Season 2: First Look at Lauren Ambrose as Adult Van

When Yellowjackets Season 2 touches down on Showtime, viewers will meet an aged-up Vanessa “Van” Palmer.

New photos released this week show Lauren Ambrose (Servant, Six Feet Under) in the role of present-day Van.

Van will have a more prominent role on the sophomore season of the red-hot drama series.

Liv Hewson, who plays the teenage version of Van, has been upped to series regular.

Ambrose will also be a series regular, meaning we’ll be delving deep into what really happened all those years ago.

Van was a key player throughout the first season, but there were plenty of unanswered questions, which we can only assume will be answered on Season 2.

Ambrose is best known for starring for five seasons in the critically-acclaimed drama Six Feet Under, which earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

She can currently be seen in M. Night Shyamalan’s psychological thriller series Servant, for which she received a Critics Choice Award nomination.

Servant returns for its fourth and final season in January.

Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, Yellowjackets is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness.

The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson (Narcos), Yellowjackets stars Emmy nominee and Critics Choice Award winner Melanie Lynskey (Castle Rock), Oscar® and Emmy nominee Juliette Lewis (Camping), Emmy nominee Christina Ricci (Z: The Beginning of Everything) and Tawny Cypress (Unforgettable).

Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) will appear in a season-long guest arc.

The Yellowjackets Season 2 cast also includes Sophie Nélisse (The Book Thief), Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers), Sophie Thatcher (Prospect), Samantha Hanratty (SHAMELESS), Courtney Eaton (Mad Max: Fury Road), Steven Krueger (The Originals), Warren Kole (Shades of Blue), and Kevin Alves.

Showtime gave the series a vote of confidence earlier this month by renewing it for the third season.

The second season debuts March 26, 2023.

President Biden Tells Drew Barrymore About Five-Time Proposal to Jill

Days of Our Lives Review for the Week of 12-19-22: A Low-Key Christmas

The Horton family Christmas is always a fan favorite. Traditionally, the characters put aside the high drama for one day, instead spending time with friends and family, hanging ornaments, and experiencing miracles.

In recent years, Christmas has stopped becoming the big deal it once was for our favorite Salemites, and that’s a shame. Family is supposed to be this soap’s backbone, supporting each other no matter what craziness the outside world throws at them.

Days of Our Lives returned to this tradition during the week of 12-19-22, offering several Christmas celebrations and the family coming together despite the tragedy of Abigail’s recent death. While Christmas 2022 was a low-key affair, it was still far more like what viewers love than many recent Christmases.

The first holiday after losing a beloved family member is always difficult, and Chad has been struggling with Abigail’s death for a while.

It’s hard to find the balance in these types of stories. Too much emphasis on Chad’s heartbreak would be depressing, while too little dilutes the impact.

Billy Flynn knocked Chad’s grief scenes out of the park. His pain and desire to give the kids a great Christmas despite Abigail’s absence were relatable and realistic, and I teared up a couple of times.

Tonight’s your dad’s big tree-trimming party. Your dad’s getting Thomas and Charlotte ready. I’ll bring them tomorrow so you can wish them a Merry Christmas. Christmas without you… I’m gonna do my best to make it okay for the kids because I know that’s what you would want. But for me? I miss you more every day, not less, like some people expect. They say it gets easier with time. Every day I can’t see your smile, hear your voice, feel you close to me… Like I said, I miss you more, not less.

Chad

Still, there wasn’t much of a story around this. Chad said his piece, Abigail appeared to him at the tree, and the credits rolled. It didn’t help that, in some ways, this all came out of nowhere.

While Chad was grieving deeply before Abigail’s killer was caught, most of his pain has been off-screen ever since. He’s bounced back and forth between being attracted to Stephanie and not ready to move on yet, and he’s been focusing on helping write press releases.

Chad suggested that he works a lot to keep his mind off Abigail, but there’s been little evidence of that up until this point, making his Christmas grief feel like a plot point rather than part of his storyline.

In addition, his children didn’t get much of an opportunity to grieve. Thomas told Sarah he missed Mommy, but that was a throwaway line in a scene whose point was to reveal to Sarah that Xander and Gwen have a secret.

Thomas: Why does Xander owe you?
Gwen: I didn’t hear you come in. Shouldn’t you be upstairs, getting ready for the party?
Thomas: I’m already ready.
Gwen: So I see. And don’t you look sharp indeed? Um, maybe you should be a good big brother and help little Charlotte get ready too.
Thomas: Grandpa Jack is helping her. Why does Xander owe you?
Gwen: Didn’t anyone ever teach you that it’s impolite to eavesdrop?
Thomas: I wasn’t eavesdropping. You were talking loud. What did you do for him?
Gwen: What did I do for Xander? I just did him a favor, that’s all.
Thomas: What kind of favor?
Gwen: My, you are persistent, aren’t you?
Thomas: If persistent means curious, then yep.

Thomas’ insistence on minding Gwen’s business was cute. I loved his assumption that persistent is another word for curious, and he definitely has inherited investigative instincts.

That poor kid, though. First, he stumbles upon “the Tooth Fairy,” and then he learns that Xander owes Gwen a favor. What kind of memories will he have when he looks back on his childhood when he’s older?

It didn’t seem to take much to please him this Christmas; despite Abigail’s absence, all he needed was the promise of dessert.

Gwen and Julie’s argument was Christmas 2022’s low point. Couldn’t these two women refrain from pettiness and insults until after the holiday?

They did not need to argue about whose dessert to put out. Offer them both and let people eat what they want. Problem solved.

Of course, it wasn’t about the dessert. Julie doesn’t want Gwen to be part of the family, and Gwen doesn’t want Julie to have the last word.

God knows Julie has plenty of reason to hate Gwen. Gwen’s done so much to ruin the Deverauxes’ lives, especially Abigail’s, that nobody understands why Jack keeps giving her another chance. He’s starting to look like Charlie Brown chasing Lucy’s football; he always thinks she’s finally learned her lesson, only to discover she’s done something else horrible.

Still, there was something cold and cruel about the way the writers handled Gwen’s presence at the Horton family party. Everyone else had an ornament with their name, even Xander, while Gwen stood off to the side, watching them all hang theirs.

Xander got an ornament because he married Sarah. Surely Jack’s daughter should get one too.

Nobody talked to Gwen or invited her to help them hang ornaments. There were a ton of missing Deverauxes; she could have hung JJ or Jo’s ornament for them.

Gwen brought her ostracization on herself, but making her stand in a corner watching everyone else participate in trimming the tree didn’t feel very Christmasy. And she lives at the Horton house, too.

Even Doug’s singing didn’t completely restore the Christmas spirit after that display of pettiness, which was one of the best parts of the Salem celebration!

Christmas 2022 seemed to be about surprise returns. Rex and Eli showed up without telling anyone they were coming, though Rex’s visit was more about moving the orchid storyline forward than anything else.

Eli’s visit was great; his empathy, rationality, and general attitude reminded me why I was sad he left Salem. It’s too bad he and Sal Stowers aren’t available for a spinoff involving Eli’s attempt to raise the kids himself while Lani is in jail; that would have made a compelling Beyond Salem story.

I’d also have loved Valerie to come to town for Christmas with Eli. She could have helped with the babies, caught up with Julie, and visited Abe.

Hopefully, Eli won’t disappear immediately after the holiday. He was always a good friend to Rafe, and I’d love his take on the whole Nicole mess. And how can Eli come to Salem and not have a scene with Abe?

Days of Our Lives built up to Christmas by having several other families celebrate early.

Kate and Roman were initially in the same boat as Julie and Doug: all of Kate’s children were out of town for the holiday. Unfortunately for Kate, Lucas and Philip are locked up, and her other children don’t visit Salem often.

Rex showing up might have been more emotional if he hadn’t been in such a rush to get Kate’s blood. That made it feel like he was only there to do a job, not to see his mother for Christmas!

That’s all set up for Round 2 of the poisoning storyline, but considering how sad Kate was that her children were absent, Rex could have spent more time with her before jumping to the blood draw.

Also, did he take Kate’s blood at one of the tables in the Brady Pub? Ew!

Meanwhile, Kristen took Rachel Christmas shopping while Li tried to impress Ari with his Santa suit.

Ari and Rachel were rude to adults, but at least Gabi told Ari to cut it out. While Li is awful, and I can’t wait for him to be exposed, there was no reason for Ari to roll her eyes and complain about how many boyfriends Gabi had when he was trying to do something nice for her for Christmas.

I’ll also never understand the tendency of some Salemites to have extensive conversations with people they hate. Chloe is far from the first to waste time arguing with their worst enemy, and she won’t be the last. But why on Earth do people stand around letting others insult them?

Rachel’s turned into a mini-Kristen, lashing out at Chloe and demanding her way all the time. Brady should never have let Kristen blackmail him; he wasn’t putting Rachel first by allowing Kristen back into her life, no matter what he says.

Eric’s plan to “kidnap” Rachel is stupid.

First, if Brady gives Eric permission to take Rachel on a trip, there’s no kidnapping. As Rachel’s father, who has custody of her, Brady has the right to consent to the trip.

This is also so out of character that it’s hard to sit through. Eric’s angry that his life has fallen apart and doesn’t want to be a doormat anymore, but is this the answer?

It feels like Eric has turned into Sami, and it’s not entertaining. Enough already.

Similarly, Sloan’s whining about how Chanel and Paulina “wronged” her needs to stop. Why is there always someone who justifies their bad behavior by telling the same sob story over and over about how someone else caused horrible things in their life?

It was obnoxious when Gabi told anyone who would listen about how Abigail stopped her from being able to have more children, and Sloan’s whining is just as bad, if not worse.

Paulina needs to get a restraining order against this idiot and be done with it. Sloan has no right to go to Chanel’s home to accost Paulina, and she definitely shouldn’t be allowed to get away with making threats.

Why is everyone acting like Sloan’s untouchable when she’s been breaking the law and doing things that should get her disbarred since her first day in Salem?

The biggest pre-Christmas story was the bombing and its aftermath.

Eric and Rafe rushed to the hospital, shaken when they heard Nicole was caught in the explosion. They both gave up when EJ was in her room, deciding that he was her boyfriend and she wasn’t worth fighting for.

This is more of the same nonsense that led to Nicole and Eric kissing in the first place. The whole world seems determined to decide for Nicole who she’s dating and how she feels.

Nicole was caught in a similar situation after the fire in the warehouse. She was trapped in a room, and Brady had to drag Eric out of the burning building without her. Yet Eric didn’t seem to remember this when he made his two-second visit.

It’s too bad Nicole doesn’t mention that to EJ. The firefighter told Eric that Nicole’s body was missing, but there was no way she could have survived, which is exactly what a different rescue worker told EJ about Susan.

EJ and Nicole will end up together, bonded to one another by this traumatic experience, but it didn’t have to be that way. If Rafe or Eric had decided after the explosion that life is too short not to fight for the woman you love, this could have been a different story.

Surprisingly, Ava headed out of Salem soon after the blast. She began claiming to see Charlie everywhere and even accused Tripp of being Charlie — but was she faking her illness to get out of trouble?

Ava has been hallucinating, but it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility for her to exaggerate her symptoms and pretend to believe Tripp and others were Charlie. That earned her a ticket to Bayview, and if serial killer Ben can come back from Bayview cured and not serve a day in jail for his crimes, Ava certainly can too.

Although she claimed Susan was dead, I’m still not convinced — but it’s less likely Ava is stashing her somewhere if Ava’s not in Salem. And what’s going to happen with Xander’s secret now that Ava isn’t in town to threaten to expose his involvement in her scheme?

At least with Ava out of town, Charlie’s ghost has no reason to stick around. Tripp also needs a better storyline than defending his mother. He was starting to slip back into the version of himself that held Kayla hostage, and nobody needs that.

I’ve often complained about how Days of Our Lives handles mental health issues, but they did a great job with Justin’s encouragement of Bonnie.

While her PTSD isn’t accurately depicted, Justin’s compassionate response was perfect. He encouraged Bonnie to get help, told her that PTSD is real, and reassured her that needing mental health treatment was nothing to be ashamed of.

Well done! Let’s have more moments like this and fewer stories about people who get violent because of mental health problems.

NFL Delays Titans-Texans Kickoff In Tennessee Because Of Winter Storm

The NFL on Saturday postponed the start of today’s Tennessee Titans-Houston Texans game in Nashville by an hour because of rolling power outages in the state due to the massive winter storm hitting most of the U.S.

The game, which was to begin at 1 p.m. ET, has been scheduled to start now at 2:02 p.m. ET. The league said Nashville Mayor John Cooper requested the postponement in solidarity with other local workers who were asked to reduce power.

Tennessee has been in the midst of rolling blackouts state-wide because of the deadly storm, which had forced more than 1,800 flight cancellations and 3,300 flight delays nationwide just today, according to FlightAware. An estimated 1.7 million in the U.S. are without power, according to Poweroutage.us.

The temperature at kickoff in Nashville is forecast to be 18 degrees.

“Due to the extreme weather and power outages affecting our region, kickoff for today’s game has been postponed one hour to 1 p.m. CT,” the Titans said in a statement. “This decision was made in partnership with the NFL, Office of Emergency Management, Nashville Electric Service and the Mayor’s Office in an abundance of caution to ensure that the game would not negatively impact our community in any way. We are exploring every possibility to minimize non-essential power around the stadium. Gates are currently open and fans are welcome to enter.”

The NFL has 11 games scheduled for Saturday ahead of three games on Christmas Day — all in cities (Miami, Los Angeles and Glendale, AZ) that have escaped the dangerously cold winter conditions blanketing the Midwest and Eastern U.S.

The night before in Nashville, the NHL’s Predators-Avalanche game at Bridgestone Arena was powered solely by generators, after games in Ottawa and Buffalo were postponed altogether. The Titans’ Nissan Stadium also has generator power.

Willie McGinest Apologizes For Restaurant Attack, ‘I Feel Horrible’

Christina Hall Shares She Has Mercury and Lead Poisoning

Christina Hall went public this week with her health problems.

The Flip or Flop star took to Instagram on Thursday and dropped some shocking news about her health.

The reality TV star said she underwent quantum biofeedback machine testing.

As for the results?

“My scan said I have mercury and lead poisoning,” Hall shared, adding:

“Most likely from all the gross houses I’ve been in (the bad flips) and I have small bacteria overgrowth.”

Hall added that she has to detox all of this through herbs and IVs and then “see how I feel and tackle implants.”

Earlier this month, Hall got candid about feeling exhausted.

“Been super exhausted lately so [I’m] on a kick to get back into my body,” Christina shared with her Instagram followers, adding that she thought the health woes could be related to her breast implants.

“I’ve had some unexplained health stuff for years, and now I’m considering the thought that this could be breast implant related,” she continued.”

Hall also revealed that she dissolved all her under-eye filler because “it was causing an inflammatory reaction.”

“Does anyone else have any experience with this subject?” Hall asked her followers.

“I’m curious on all the ladies take on this.”

Hall has been a mainstay on reality TV since 2014, starring alongside her now ex-husband Tarek El Mousa on Flip or Flop.

HGTV announced Flip or Flop would end after 10 seasons earlier this year.

“I’m filled with gratitude to have done 10 seasons of a hit show. I remember filming the pilot and thinking, ‘wouldn’t this be crazy if is this [sic] actually made it to network tv?’ And here we are, a decade later,” Hall wrote.

“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank each and every one of you who have watched the show throughout the years.”

“I am beyond grateful for the support.”

Hall is currently seen on Christina on The Coast, airing Thursdays on HGTV.
