Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 7 Review: Headspace

Well, Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 7 did not begin as expected.

Rather than picking up where we left off with Ted and Sharon, it opens two days later with Roy and Keeley.

Still, who can resist a montage scored to Sonny and Cher’s I Got You Babe?

“I Got You Babe” is a particularly inspired choice in this instance because it evokes Groundhog Dog, the movie, and thus the feeling of being caught in a neverending time loop.

This is the first time we see Roy as an overbearing shadow to Keeley, but the montage quickly offers clues on how this is a long-simmering issue, and Keeley is close to her breaking point.

It’s an important storyline because it explores the consequences of Roy accepting the coaching position and moves Keeley and Roy’s relationship past the honeymoon stage.

All the individual scenes comprising the storyline are great, especially the scene where Jamie, of all people, provides Roy with the epiphany on what Keeley needs. The bath scene is swoon-worthy.

While Roy Kent always elevates anything he’s in, his scene-stealing winds up working against the storyline. More than halfway through Ted Lasso Season 2 and this is the first plotline to focus on Keeley’s issues instead of her helping others with theirs.

Keeley: I did also need some space.
Ted: Space from what?
Keeley: Roy. He’s sitting in my office reading Da Vinci Code. He keeps muttering on about the Knights Templar.

However, as the story progresses, the focus shifts from Keeley to Roy. The resolution hinges on him coming to a realization and being the one who takes action to solve their argument.

There was no other way for the story to play out because he was in the wrong and needed to make things right, but in doing so, the story becomes more about him than it does about Keeley.

It doesn’t help that Keeley’s feelings are perfectly understandable — everyone needs space — while Roy’s behavior presents an intriguing mystery. Why is he acting so clingy? Working theory is he’s overcompensating because, in the past, he wasn’t so attentive.

It probably won’t happen, but a scene of Roy having a session with Sharon goes on the wishlist.

Sharon has her plate full with Ted. We miss out on seeing Sharon counsel Ted in the immediate aftermath of his panic attack, but as the episode unfolds, it becomes more understandable why Ted Lasso skipped over the immediate aftermath.

The panic attack didn’t change Ted’s feelings about therapy. Until he overcomes his mistrust of it, neither he nor we will get much out of it.

Ted, the truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

Sharon

What’s smart about how the therapy sessions are written is how the writing seems to anticipate what the audience will be thinking. Any TV show depicting therapy will be compared to The Sopranos, so Ted lampshades it.

Comparing Ted Lasso to The Sopranos makes for an interesting exercise, especially when comparing the two leads. Ted and Tony are such opposites. They even hold opposite views on therapy — the sole subject where Tony has the more progressive view than Ted.

The writing also anticipates the rebuttal to Ted’s argument for why therapy is bulls**t. As Sharon rightly points out, Ted doesn’t coach for free.

Ted’s sessions with Sharon demand a lot from Jason Sudeikis as a performer. No surprise, he rises to the occasion, especially during the second session when Ted’s rage gradually gets the better of him.

Sarah Niles has the less flashy role, but she is no less adept. Niles does a great job of balancing Sharon’s professionalism and empathy. From her facial expressions alone, we can tell Ted is proving to be a challenge for her.

Like Ted, Sharon finds herself needing to apply her usual tactics in new ways.

Previously we’ve seen Sharon speak in the players’ home language to form a bond with them. Since she and Ted are both English speakers, the language alone is not enough. She needs to learn Ted-speak. Judging from the catchy sayings she’s coming up with, she’s getting the hang of it.

Sharon: Well, I can’t be your mentor without occasionally being your tormentor.
Ted: Ooh, I like that.
Sharon: I knew you would.

She’s going to need every trick in her arsenal because Ted has a long therapeutic road ahead of him.

The one person who could benefit more than Ted to have a sit down with Sharon is Nate. I still love Nate as a character and remain invested in his journey, but he was awful this episode. Those scenes where he insults and browbeats Will and Colin were brutal.

Even with the action during the final scene between Nate and Will happening offscreen, it hit like a punch in the face.

Colin’s takedown was scary not just because of how stinging the insults were but also because the audience knows Colin is fragile. Someone who needs “I’m a strong and capable man” as a mantra must not be feeling very strong and capable. It legitimately felt like Nate could push him over the edge.

Nate: You see, Jamie and Dani are like Picasso and Gauguin.
Colin: Pedophiles?
Nate: Artists, they’re artists. And, Colin, you paint too, but your work doesn’t end up in museums. It hangs at … Well, you’re like a painting at a Holiday Inn. You don’t inspire. You don’t move people. You’re there. You cover a bloodstain. You do the job, so just do the job.

Hats off to all the actors for selling all of it.

With Nate’s behavior becoming more problematic as he receives outside praise, including the possibility of outside offers to manage a team, it begs the question of how dark Nate’s story will go. Is he Ted Lasso’s Anakin Skywalker?

Comments from Ted Lasso Season 1 Episode 10 indicate he may know Rebecca schemed to ruin Richmond, and he must have other dirt. Will he betray the team? It seems unthinkable, but it’s becoming more and more likely.

‘Intelligence’ Producer Expectation Turns First Profit Despite Covid

EXCLUSIVE: Expectation, the British production company behind series such as David Schwimmer comedy Intelligence and Amazon’s Clarkson’s Farm, has posted its first profit since launching in 2017.

This comes despite the Covid-19 pandemic “severely disrupting” a number of its productions.

The company, which was set up by former Endemol chief Tim Hincks and ex-ITV content chief Peter Fincham, posted a profit of £438,145 (US$606,124) in the twelve months to 31 March 2021, a significant improvement on the £2.9M loss that it incurred in the previous year.

This profit was posted from revenues of £34.8M, a 23% increase from the prior year’s figure of £28.3M.

The directors of the company, in its financial statements to Companies House, said that they were “delighted” with the results, during what it called a “difficult” year.

“The group’s upward trajectory continues, having reached profit in its fourth year of trading as originally planned; when we signed the 2020 accounts last year, we anticipated becoming profitable in 2022 due to disruption from the pandemic, so to do so a year earlier is a great result,” they noted.

Watch on Deadline

Expectation produced and delivered 24 productions, including pilots during the financial year, across all five genres that it operates in: entertainment, comedy entertainment, scripted drama, scripted comedy and factual and factual drama.

Big recent wins for the producer include Clarkson’s Farm, which is thought to be one of Amazon’s biggest international originals and has been renewed for a second season, BBC comedy Alma’s Not Normal, its first Netflix commission in The Nailbomber, a feature-length doc about the bombings that happened in London 20 years ago, and The Chelsea Detective, a crime series for AMC Networks’ Acorn TV and Germany’s ZDF, written by Fincham himself.

The BBC Studios-backed business noted that it had an “excellent spread” of customers including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Netflix, Amazon, and UKTV and said that this would increase further with commissions from the likes of Acorn and YouTube.

Despite turning a profit, the company did note that the Covid-19 caused major challenges and meant that it wasn’t able to hit its planned revenue target of £60M. It added that many shows had their delivery dates delayed by between three months and a year.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the whole television industry. Lockdowns, social distancing measures and an initial period without insurance cover available for Covid-19 meant for several months in the year – April to August 2020 – the ability to produce television was severley disrupted, with active productions being paused and new productions being delayed or cancelled completely,” it added.

Brian Austin Green Joins ‘Dancing with the Stars’ For Season 30

Grey’s Anatomy Surprise: Addison Montgomery Scrubs Back In!

That’s right, Addison Montgomery is returning to Grey Sloan Memorial!

The casting news for Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 includes bringing back familiar faces like Kate Burton and new ones like Peter Gallagher.

But Grey’s fans can rejoice over the return of fan-favorite, the iconic Addison Montgomery.

This will be the first time that Kate Walsh reprises the role since Grey’s Anatomy’s first spin-off, Private Practice.

According to Deadline, Walsh will reprise her role in a multi-episode arc. However, the details surrounding it are being kept under wraps.

And after all, isn’t that how we like it?

Previous Grey’s Anatomy alum ranging from Patrick Dempsey and T.R. Knight to Chyler Leigh and Eric Dane returned to the series in a buzzworthy Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 while Meredith Grey suffered from COVID.

The previous season also saw the return of Sarah Drew as the series bid farewell to Jesse Williams’ Jackson Avery.

Addison and Meredith had a rocky relationship that eventually worked out, and Addison and Amelia have always been close.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Addison shows up for Amelia in some capacity.

Grey Sloan Memorial also has a revolving door of OBGYNs, and with Carina DeLuca spending most of her time on Station 19, it could be possible that Addison comes to the hospital for a case.

Jo has also shown some interest in neonatal care, and it would be interesting if she and Addison worked together however brief.

Kate Walsh was always open to returning to the series.

Walsh took to Instagram to make the grand announcement, putting her white coat back on and getting into character.

She stated, “I’m so excited to be home again.”

We previously reported that Kate Burton will return to the 18th season reprising her role as Ellis Grey.

Ellis died some time ago, so there’s speculation about the nature of her appearance and whether or not Meredith will still be having visions of deceased loved ones as she continues to battle long-haul COVID.

Peter Gallagher will also recur on the series in the upcoming season.

He’s rumored to have had a close relationship with Ellis Grey at some point in her life.

It’s safe to say that he may be bringing some secrets or other information about Meredith’s mother that she otherwise didn’t know.

Grey’s Anatomy returns Thursday, September 30 on ABC at 9/8c.

If you need to catch up on the series, you can watch Grey’s Anatomy online here via TV Fanatic.

First Full Trailer For ‘Yellowstone’ Season 4 Offers Clues To John Dutton’s Fate

SPOILER ALERT: Who shot John Dutton? That’s the question for impatient Yellowstone fans after the most compelling season 3 cliffhanger since, maybe, Dallas?

The first full trailer for season 4 of Taylor Sheridan’s hit Paramount Network series offers a lot more detail than the 30-second teaser that lit up the internet two weeks ago.

For one thing, we see Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler approach Kevin Costner’s bloodied Dutton saying, “Don’t you die on me.” (Costner’s character was shot and left on a lonely stretch of road at the end of season 3.)

So whodunnit? Like TV’s most famous cliffhanger 41 years ago, it could be just about anyone.

We get a lot of voiceover from the murderous Garrett (Will Patton), who’s the biological father of Dutton’s black sheep son Jamie (Wes Bentley). Garrett, who last season urged Jamie to (figuratively, at least) stab his adopted father in the back says, “Fair, moral: Those are words men invented to scare and shame other men from taking back what they’d stolen.” “What about right or wrong?” asks Jamie. “There’s no such thing,” replies Garrett.

We also get shots of John Dutton’s rivals Roarke (Josh Holloway), Chief Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) before the words “Every Body Pays” flash across the screen.

Watch on Deadline

And we didn’t even mention the hints about the fate of Dutton’s daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly), whose office was firebombed, or his son Kayce (Luke Grimes), last seen overturning his desk and returning fire as gunmen entered his office or Jimmy, whose unconscious after falling off his horse.

We also see an image of new cast member Jacki Weaver, who plays Market Equities CEO Caroline Warner.

Yellowstone Season 4 begins with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, Nov. 7.

Watch the trailer above to see it all.

Jordan Tate on ‘Baywatch’ ‘Memba Her?!

North Cambridge native Traci Bingham was in her 20s when she landed her breakout role as the lifeguard looker Jordan Tate — who heroically saves beach-goers in distress along the sun-kissed shores of Southern California — in the later seasons of the iconic slow-mo television show “Baywatch.”

Bingham shared the small screen with some top-notch actors including Pamela Anderson as the blonde beach babe, C.J. Parker, Donna D’Errico as the seaside guardian angel, Donna Marco, Jeremy Jackson as the up-and-coming kid, Hobie Buchannon … and of course David Hasselhoff as the man in charge, Mitch Buchannon.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Episode 4 Review: Mugato, Gumato

The running joke on Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Episode 4 gets tired pretty quickly, but, thankfully, it’s not expected to carry the show.

In brief, the horned apes of the planet Neural appeared on Star Trek: The Original Series Season 2 Episode 16, but the scriptwriters changed the name multiple times, and then the cast couldn’t pronounce it correctly or consistently.

For canon-lovers, it’s probably a belly laugh and a half, but for the rest of us (who aren’t Rutherford), it goes in the meh column.

Mariner kicking butt in the anbo-jyutsu arena wasn’t unexpected, although Boimer and Rutherford sporting their wounds in the crew mess later was strange.

Maybe they didn’t want to go to sickbay for a recreational injury. Maybe they didn’t want it on record how badly Mariner had beaten them?

One purpose the butt-kicking serves is to demonstrate why Otis’s comment about her hanging with the “softest” guys on the ship might seem to ring true.

They are really soft fellas, which balances out Mariner’s aggressive nature. This is also why Jet was never going to last on Delta Team.

And to follow the butt-kicking with a rousing board game of Diplomats just cements the lovable geekiness of this duo (in addition to foreshadowing their solution to the Ferengi situations) which contrasts Mariner’s recreational inclinations.

Reminiscent of Strategema from Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 2 Episode 21, where Data learned that, in order to win, he had to strive to play to a draw, Boimer and Rutherford’s game ends when compromise is reached.

Mariner: Let’s hit the phaser range. I need moving targets.
Boimler: This isn’t work. We’re playing Diplomats!
Rutherford: And we’re at a crucial point in the negotiations. We’re both about to lose!
Mariner: Why is that good?
Boimler: If both sides are equally unsatisfied with the negotiation, you can close the deal.

The joy of cooperative board games is beautifully encapsulated in their celebration of mutual dissatisfaction.

Of course, the idea of Mariner being anything but what she is wouldn’t have crossed their minds without the meddling of Otis the Bartender, who suddenly appears here in all his folksy, gossipy glory.

A bit of poison in the ear can go a long way to destroy relationships, and, unfortunately, Rutherford is fertile soil for that suspicion.

Our resident cyborg has become a magnet for misinterpreted friendship overtures, secret Bajoran resurrection rites, and, now, black ops rumors.

Boimler: So I was reading up on the Mugato. Did you know they have alternative pronunciations? Mugatu, Mugutu, and Gumato? Isn’t that neat and inconsistent?
Rutherford: Hm.
Boimler: Dude, I’m talking alien pronunciations here. That’s, like, your favorite thing. What’s up?

Scientific curiosity is one thing, but Rutherford is becoming almost compulsive about jumping down rabbit-holes of conspiracies.

One would think that the cyborg influence would imbue a penchant for logic. Apparently, not.

Now, if I’m reading this right, this is the third time this season (out of only four episodes so far) that Mariner’s been pushed to be honest with someone.

On Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Episode 1, Ransom’s apotheosis forced her to come clean with Freeman about her feelings on the mommy-captain situation.

On Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Episode 3, she and Tendi have their girl time and clear up some misunderstandings about each other.

Now, she has to disclose to Boimler and Rutherford the weird defense mechanisms she sets in place on every ship she serves on to keep people at a distance.

Oh wait, she and Jet had to ‘fess up to their respective blindspots when it comes to pecking order on the team on Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Episode 2.

Yeah, there’s no getting around this. It’s been The Beckett Mariner Show since the premiere dropped.

Which wouldn’t be an issue except that I liked that Season 1 sold us on the ensemble thing.

Shaxs: Mariner, what’s happening?
Mariner: Those two beautiful nerdy men are negotiating us to safety using the power of Math!

Kudos that she doesn’t have to be the hero in every adventure. Now, if she could knock a few missions out as the supportive grunt/muscle and not the catalyst or solution… it might be refreshing.

Tendi’s whole backstory as the “Mistress of the Winter Constellations” still fascinates me. I’m holding out hope that, as her confidence builds, she’ll be willing to tap back into the Orion badass she says she left behind.

Her second mission in as many episodes for T’Ana has her sniping crew members who are avoiding their annual physical.

All in all, a fun little B plotline as she figures out assertively (and effectively) how to sneak up on people or work around their resistance, culminating with the tooth and claw battle with T’Ana herself.

T’Ana: When I picked you for this job, I was counting on you to give up.
Tendi: Well, maybe the old Tendi was a pushover, but a lot’s changed since slightly earlier today.

Maybe it’s the animated nature of the show, but sometimes the action sequences feel like they’d translate well to a video game.

Couldn’t you see Tendi’s whole task list as a mini-quest where the player has to utilize multiple strategies to acquire the various scans of the personnel on the hit list?

Now, down on the planet, that’s less of a video game and more of a free-for-all.

Again, noting that Kayshon was clearly sparring with Jet when Tendi scanned him, I’m going to assume that he’s still on security detail, although Shaxs is back as Chief.

The pivot from mugato horn poaching/smuggling to exploiting the environmental tourism industry is such a 2021 solution.

It’s never explained how so many mugato became established on Frylon IV. Did the Ferengi import them? Did the mugato teleport? Is this their actual homeworld, and Neural was a colony?

On average, I’m finding there is one scene per offering this season that I just don’t need to comment on. Mugato sex plus voyeurism definitely wins that honor this time around.

To be fair, baby mugatos have to come from somewhere.

You all got the briefing. No weapons. These Mugutus are endangered, and their genitals are sensitive to phaser fire.

Shaxs

And to speak to Shaxs’s instructions to the away team, wouldn’t the genitalia of any species be sensitive to phaser fire? Hmm?

So, how much did you appreciate their “back to nature” take on a canon creature?

Do you think Tendi’s burgeoning self-esteem will stick the landing and carry forward?

How far will Mariner’s new rumor about Boimler and Rutherford go via Otis-gram?

Beam down to the comments, and let us know what got your salute and what you’d send to the brig!

Munich Terror Drama Set At Sky From CBS Studios & Amusement Park Film

Sky has ordered a terrorist drama series about an incident in Germany set 50 years after the Munich massacre.

The broadcaster has ordered Munich Match (w/t) from CBS Studios, A Most Wanted Man producer Amusement Park Film and its own Sky Studios.

It marks one of the most high-profile projects for CBS Studios internationally after the ViacomCBS unit began ramping up its global presence.

The series will launch across all Sky territories including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland with production starting this month in Germany.

The six-part series is set 50 years after the Munich Massacre; a traumatic terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team in 1972. It’s now 2022, and on the anniversary of the attack, Munich is hosting a ‘friendly’ soccer game between an Israeli and a German football club. Tensions and nerves are running high, with the political stakes even higher as the eyes of the world watch on. Everything is being done to make the match a safe and peaceful event. But when things start to fall apart, it seems history might be repeating all over again.

Created by Fauda writer Michal Aviram, who wrote the scripts with Martin Behnke. Philipp Kadelbach is directing. Daniel Brühl, Amelie von Kienlin, Malte Grunert from Amusement Park Film, Frank Jastfelder and Julia Jaensch from Sky Studios, Meghan Lyvers from CBS Studios, Michal Aviram and Philipp Kadelbach serve as executive producers while Martin Behnke serves as co-executive producer.

Watch on Deadline

ViacomCBS Global Distribution Group will distribute the series outside of German speaking territories, the UK, and Italy.

“When Israeli author Michal Aviram first told us about her idea for Munich Match, we were immediately fascinated,” said Amusement Park Film’s Amelie von Kienlin. “This modern multinational thriller is not only deeply rooted in Germany’s traumatic history, but also fulfills Amusement Park Film’s ambition to tell stories that are relevant and appeal to an international audience at the same time. We are also fans of political thrillers, a genre with enormous potential that we feel has been neglected in German programming so far. With the authors Michal Aviram and Martin Behnke and the director Philipp Kadelbach, we couldn’t have asked for a better creative team to work on this series, and we are extremely happy to be working with Sky and CBS Studios, who have proven to be true partners.”

“Munich Match is a remarkably authentic thriller series with a threatening conspiracy so close to reality that it truly holds up a frightening mirror to our society,” says Sky Studios Deutschland’s Julia Jaensch. “We can’t wait to see the excellent work of Michal Aviram, Martin Behnke and Philipp Kadelbach come together, and are excited to have partnered up with CBS Studios on this fantastic project.”

“Munich Match is an incredibly relevant series and in a genre which global audiences cannot get enough of,” said Meghan Lyvers, Senior Vice President of International Co-Productions and Development, CBS Studios. “While the story is specific and unique, the characters and themes explored are truly universal. We are thrilled to support the creative team behind this series and partner with Sky in bringing it to life.”
