Clarice Season 1 Episode 3 Review: Are You Alright?

At least Clarice was proven right.

Some of the truth came out on Clarice Season 1 Episode 3.

The question now is where ViCAP goes from there.

Despite Krendler trying his hardest to deliver a serial killer to please Attorney-General Martin, Clarice shot down that theory, in front of the press no less, on Clarice Season 1 Episode 1.

Like any agent fresh out of Quantico, Clarice isn’t particularly savvy, as either an investigator or a politician. And, in her role as the poster girl for ViCAP, she really needs to be both.

Also, she needs to heal, which is hard to do when she’s been thrust back into the sewer which first infected her.

But most importantly, Clarice is a stubborn fighter. She trusts and follows her instincts, even if many of those around her don’t and won’t.

The opening was just so Clarice.

Rather than celebrate the bust at the militia compound in Tennessee on Clarice Season 1 Episode 2, she went straight to interview the reporter she saved, who unfortunately was too psychologically shaken to be of much help to her.

Instead of working on her own mental health, Clarice then politely blew off her therapist to be part of the interrogation of Karl Wellig, the hitman in the River Murders.

So what if she keeps seeing moths and flashing back to her father’s murder? Those will pass if she keeps her mind otherwise occupied.

Krendler did the only thing he could to salvage his investigation by rescinding Clarice’s statement to the press. She may be right, but she shouldn’t have tipped the team’s hand like that.

But she didn’t take that as a rebuke. She understood why Krendler did what he did. Instead, she resolved to be a team player, doing whatever was asked of her, regardless of how menial.

That didn’t mean she wouldn’t use every opportunity to learn more about Wellig.

When taking his fingerprints and bite impressions, she discovered he had a strict moral code when it came to women. Krendler and Esquivel used that bit of analysis to attempt to get Wellig to confess by offending that code. But he knew they were lying.

Then she sent Esquivel back in to attempt to bond with his fellow sniper.

Unfortunately, after being ambushed by that House subcommittee, the A.G. was pressuring Krendler to turn Wellig into a serial killer, even though he didn’t fit the profile.

You really can’t blame Ruth for wanting to take monsters such as Buffalo Bill off the street, even if she has to manufacture them to keep ViCap operational for when a real one comes along.

After following her home, it became clear why she feels the way she does — because her daughter Catherine hasn’t bounced back at all.

She appeared to be training for the battle against her personal demon, but she remains too terrified to leave her room.

While it’s wonderful that she adopted Buffalo Bill’s dog Precious, the canine’s yapping can’t help but send Catherine back to the site of her captivity.

Little wonder that Ruth has been pressuring Clarice to take Catherine’s calls. While Clarice is still beset with hallucinations, at least she’s functional, unlike Catherine.

It helps that Clarice has Ardelia there to give her something resembling a normal social life.

The time together with Ardelia is the only time that Clarice doesn’t seem to be a humorless grind.

Ardelia is quickly becoming an unofficial member of ViCAP, which, considering the scut work that usually gets dumped on her, is probably something she welcomes.

Her discovering the dental training mold was a key development in the case, which enabled Clarice to better understand Wellig and his motivations.

That, along with an unintentional toss of a coffee mug, enabled Clarice to get Krendler’s attention long enough to request one more shot to interrogate Wellig.

She correctly sensed that he wanted to turn against his employers but required witness protection, not just a deal, to do so.

Clarice was making real headway until Wellig took that fatal slug of the poisoned root beer.

The signs were present if the team hadn’t been too distracted to notice.

The overly friendly local cop had the bag lunch specially marked for Wellig, which seemed a lot of effort to make for a suspect.

Then there was Wellig’s insistent lawyer, who, although he had declined counsel, ran when Tripathi pushed him about his credentials.

The poison used could be traced back to a pharmaceutical company, as could the three River Murders. Clarice may have proven her conspiracy theory, but now the team just lost their best lead.

Make that two leads, as the reporter disappeared as well.

Her teammates are starting to trust her, but it’s been slow, oh so slow.

So far, Clarice has been an intriguing blend of character development and single-episode and ongoing cases.

Didn’t you love how Clarice fired her therapist? She admitted she needed help, but she required someone smarter than him and smarter than her as well. I think she would respond better to a female shrink.

The key part is her deciding that she has a problem she can’t ignore any longer.

To follow Clarice’s development, watch Clarice online.

Is Clarice learning how to fit in better with the team?

Are they coming around on her?

How much of ViCAP’s problem are the A.G.’s own fears?

Jimmy Kimmel Tackles Trump’s Taxes, “Karen In Congress” Marjorie Taylor Greene

Donald Trump, more than a month since his last day in the White House, turned late night’s heads as New York prosecutors finally acquired the former president’s tax returns. Among the hosts poking fun at the long-awaited moment was Jimmy Kimmel.

“I wonder how many pages of the Cheesecake Factory menu he snuck in there,” the Jimmy Kimmel Live host quipped on Thursday.

During his opening monologue, Kimmel referred to an old New York Times report that shared that Trump “paid no taxes at all” for the years he filed his taxes because “he lost huge amounts of money” then. From Trump’s financial position to the 2020 election, Kimmel said there was a word to describe someone like Trump.

“Guillermo, what’s the word?,” Kimmel asked Guillermo.

“Loser,” he responded.

Kimmel criticized the fact that Trump can “claim huge losses, pay no taxes, and still live like a billionaire,” adding that potential tax evasion might not even land the former Celebrity Apprentice host in jail. Instead of white privilege, Kimmel said that Trump benefits form “Orange Privilege.”

The late night host also tacked Trump supporter and “frontrunner for worst human of ’21” Marjorie Taylor Greene, for her opposition to the Equality Act. He also highlighted Taylor Greene calling herself a victim of the Jan. 6 attacks in the U.S. Capitol.

Kimmel said he found Taylor Greene’s comments in Congress interesting given that  that Anthony Aguero, a conservative activist who was among the rioters on Jan. 6, was of the representative’s “closest friends and allies.”

“Oh my god we’ve got a Karen in Congress now, she’s so awful,” he said.

New Covid-19 variants, monkeys and the Potato Head rebranding controversy also shared the spotlight during Kimmel’s monologue. Watch it above.

Elite Season 5 Ordered at Netflix With More New Cast Members

The trials and tribulations of the students at Las Encinas will continue to be charted at Netflix.

The streamer on Thursday officially ordered a fifth season of the Spanish-language drama Elite, well in advance of its Season 4 premiere.

Netflix made the announcement on Twitter, but Deadline revealed that the fifth season will also bring another two new cast members into the fold in Argentinian actress Valentina Zenere (Cable Girls) and Brazilian actor André Lamoglia (Juacas), but no character details were revealed.

Elite typically likes to keep viewers in suspense when new additions are announced due to the nature of the series.

Each season follows a new mystery in a similar vein to Big Little Lies, with the characters being quizzed by the police about the events.

Elite was renewed for Season 4 in May last year, but production was scuppered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the series finishing filming much later than originally planned.

As a result, fans are still awaiting a premiere date, but according to rumors, it will be launching within the next six weeks.

Andrés Velencoso (Velvet Colección, Edha), Manu Rios (El Chiringuito de Pepe), Carla Díaz (El Príncipe), Martina Cariddi (Mientras dure la guerra), Pol Granch, and Diego Martín (Velvet, Familia) are all new cast members for the fourth season.

Their characters will cross paths with Guzmán (Miguel Bernardeau), Samuel (Itzan Escamilla), Ander (Arón Piper), Omar (Omar Ayuso), Rebeca (Claudia Salas), and Cayetana (Georgina Amorós).

Álvaro Rico is out as Leopoldo “Polo” Benavent Villada after the events of Season 3, which followed a How to Get Away With Murder-esque killing that resulted in his character being, well, dead.

Mina El Hammani played Nadia Shanaa in the first three seasons, but her character exited alongside Danna Paola’s as Lucrecia “Lu” Montesinos Hendrich to attend university in New York.

We should probably expect updates about them given that their closest friends will still be a part of the ensemble.

Ester Expósito will also not be back as Carla Rosón Caleruega. She quit town in the season three finale after putting her father in his place, leaving Samuel heartbroken.

Finally, Jorge López previously revealed that he didn’t think he would be playing Valerio Montesinos Rojas during the fourth season, and given that he’s not a part of the cast announcement, we’re inclined to agree.

What are your thoughts on the news, Elite fanatics?

Are you surprised the show is forging ahead with even more new cast members?

Do you think it should end soon?

NBCUniversal Teams With Charter In Major Expansion Of Addressable Ad Footprint

NBCUniversal is expanding the number of households reachable with addressable advertising — a newer form of brand messages based on metrics beyond traditional demos — by 40% through a new deal with Charter Communications.

The media company will now be able to serve addressable ads to 45 million households, which it says makes it one of the largest potential customer pools reachable through a TV ad system. The Spectrum-branded pay-TV and broadband platforms operated by Charter, the no. 2 cable provider in the U.S., will be accessible by NBCU for selling addressable campaigns on their own inventory. The deal will begin with Spectrum VOD platforms during the current quarter of 2021.

Addressable advertising, which has been buzzed about in TV and ad business circles over the past decade, has grown slowly for a number of reasons, from industry politics to technology infrastructure. Streaming has supercharged the concept, and NBCU is particularly focused on unlocking the potential of digital advertising on its new streaming platform, Peacock. Champions of advanced ads see them as an antidote to the “spray-and-pray” approach of traditional TV advertising. Instead of relying only on traditional Nielsen demographics, advertisers, programmers and TV operators can serve ads to particular consumers based on geography, purchasing history or a host of other data points.

“Viewing habits have been evolving for some time now, and continue to accelerate towards on-demand and streaming platforms. Advertisers need to meet viewers in the moment, and that’s why NBCUniversal has been laser-focused on expanding our addressable capabilities,” said Krishan Bhatia, President & Chief Business Officer, Global Advertising and Partnerships, NBCUniversal. “Through our partnership with Charter Communications, we are taking an important step forward by delivering targeted advertising to millions of Spectrum viewers who are watching video on demand. This will enable us to continue to connect our viewers to the brands they know and love, at any time of the day.”

NBCU has been offering advanced targeting solutions to client and agency partners through its AdSmart platform since 2015.

“We look forward to working with NBCUniversal to help them expand their addressable offerings, and send more relevant advertisements at scale, to Spectrum customers,” said David Kline, EVP at Charter Communications, and President of Spectrum Reach. “This partnership will provide NBCU an opportunity to make their networks more impactful to advertisers, while also furthering our goal to bring scale and accessibility to addressable TV.”

Criminal Minds Revival Ordered at Paramount+

That was fast.

Just a year after Criminal Minds went off the air, and just days after a revival was teased, Paramount+ has officially ordered a reboot of the beloved series.

Details are scarce about the project, but it will follow the team investigating a single case over ten brand-new episodes, suggesting that it will be a limited series.

News of the revival so soon after the original series wrapped is somewhat surprising, but it is a huge series across the globe, and if the streamer is serious about expanding, this could be one of the best shows to do it with.

The CBS original series focused on a group of criminal profilers who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral Analysis Unit using behavioral analysis and profiling to investigate crimes and find perpetrators.

It gave us the story of the team as they worked various cases and tackled their personal struggles as they pushed themselves and their teammates to their limits as they tried to take these villains down.

Per Deadline, no creative team has currently been established for the project, but it is expected to be spearheaded by Erica Messer, who was the showrunner on the original.

This will come as good news to fans because the Messer-led years were some of the best and the final season was actually a great way to wrap the beloved show up.

If you’re wondering how the show will be brought back given the way everything was wrapped up, then this news might be the kicker for you:

It’s unclear which cast members will be returning.

The expansive cast during its CBS run included the likes of Mandy Patinkin, Shemar Moore, Joe Mantegna, Aisha Tyler, Matthew Gray Gubler, Thomas Gibson, Lola Glaudini, Adam Rodriguez, and Paget Brewster, and many more.

It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to bring back some of the cast members from earlier in the show’s run, as well as some of the later additions, mixed with a cast of newbies.

Paramount+ will likely want to make this accessible for new viewers and old viewers.

All 15 seasons of the original series will be available to stream on Paramount+ when it goes through its overhaul on March 4, changing its name from CBS All Access.

And if that isn’t enough Criminal Minds, then this news may also be of interest to you:

An unscripted series is also coming to the streamer, per Deadline, and would be focused on real-life cases and how they are investigated.

New streamers doubling down on proven franchises is hardly surprising, and this latest announcement comes on the same day that the streamer announced a Frasier revival, Younger’s final season, a Fatal Attraction TV series, as well as the news that it would be picking up new Paranormal Activity and Pet Sematary.

Paramount+ Pricing And Tiers Revealed: What’s In The $5 And $10 Monthly Plans

Paramount+ will have two subscription tiers: a basic one costing $5 a month and a higher level at $10 a month.

The $10 plan will be ad-free and will have some programming not available on the basic, ad-supported tier. Ingredients in the higher-end plan include the live CBS signal, which has been a key element of CBS All Access, the predecessor of Paramount+.

Tom Ryan, president and CEO of ViacomCBS Streaming, announced the pricing and plan details during the company’s online investor day presentation today, saying it will take effect in June. “To quote a line from a CBS classic, the price is right,” Ryan declared.

The base tier, he said, will include “the full spectrum of the Paramount+ experience” at “an incredible value.” Subscribers will get live sports like the NFL and UAIFA soccer; news from CBSN and on-demand CBS News segments; Paramount+ originals; Paramount movies; and “a massive portion” of library titles and current seasons of CBS shows.

In addition to a lack of ads, the premium tier will offer live sports supplemented by “even more CBS Sports,” Ryan said, without elaborating. News will be “enriched” by news feeds, he said, including local news from stations around the country. Keeping the day’s metaphor going, he promised that premium subscribers’ “mountain of entertainment will get even taller, with the full, live CBS TV experience at their fingertips.”

Ryan also said bundles will also be set up for Paramount+ and other, unspecified streaming offerings under the ViacomCBS tent, with a goal of creating an “integrated ecosystem of services.” In a Q&A session with analysts, Ryan said the company settled on the two-tier structure in order to be able to reach the “greatest addressable audience.”

The pricing puts the ViacomCBS at the low-to-mid-range among the spate of new streaming services. NBCUniversal’s Peacock has a free, ad-supported basic tier and a $5 premium level. At the high end is HBO Max at $15 a month. Apple and Disney have staked out the middle ground in subscription streaming. Netflix, the longtime leader in streaming, goes for $14 for its most popular U.S. plan.

The new structure follows the general outline of CBS All Access, which was an early direct-to-consumer offering when it launched in 2015. The basic tier of CBS All Access was $6 a month. In a departure from precedent, there is a differentiated content offering, adding other choices beyond merely whether to have ads or not. Ryan said it will also offer ways for the company to “upsell” viewers of Paramount+ who may want to add Showtime’s OTT service.

A channel on the company’s free, ad-supported service Pluto markets showtime and is an effective customer acquisition tool, Ryan added during the Q&A. He said more information about bundling would be shared soon.

Several analysts seemed to be not completely in sync with the pricing, with some noting the continued growth of Netflix despite several jumps in price. Disney has also bumped up prices for Disney+ and Hulu boosted its premium ticket. One typical question was posed by Vijay Jayant at Evercore ISI. “I’m just trying to understand the economics of this business,” he said. He estimated that the company’s current revenue per subscriber, counting advertising and affiliate fees, comes in at $17 to $18 per traditional subscriber. “When you talk about your pricing for these products, obviously you don’t know what the ad component is, how is this going to be accretive to the enterprise?”

CFO Naveen Chopra replied by asserting that “scale will present a tremendous opportunity” in streaming compared with traditional distribution. The company also is betting on being able to replicate the “dual revenue stream” approach of traditional pay-TV with subscription and ad revenue both filling the coffers, he said.

CBS All Access will officially be rebranded as Paramount+ next Thursday in the U.S. and Latin America, with other global territories to follow. Prior to the streaming showcase, ViacomCBS announced it has surpassed 30 million global subscribers to its entire streaming portfolio.
