Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season Eight to End NBC Comedy Series in 2021-22

Brooklyn Nine-Nine TV show on NBC: season 8 ending, no season 9

(Photo: Jordin Althaus/NBC)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is ending once again, along with the show’s chances of a ninth season. The workplace comedy series initially ran for five seasons on FOX before being cancelled, and then revived by NBC. Now, after three seasons on the peacock network, the show will end again. A premiere date has not been announced but the eighth and final season has been delayed until the 2021-22 season, following coronavirus production shutdowns.

Starring Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker, and Joel McKinnon Miller, Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows the lives of NYPD detective Jake Peralta (Samberg) and others at the fictional 99th Precinct in Brooklyn, New York.

Here’s NBC’s announcement:

NBC’S ‘BROOKLYN NINE-NINE’ TO CLOSE ITS PRECINCT’S DOORS AFTER EIGHTH AND FINAL SEASON

Beloved Series to Air in 2021-22 Season and Signs Off as One of the Favorite Comedies of All Time

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – Feb. 11, 2021 – Det. Jake Peralta and the squad will be gathering for one final stakeout as NBC will air the eighth and final season of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” during the 2021-22 television season.

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” in its first year of eligibility, won the 2014 Golden Globe Award for Best TV Comedy Series in 2014 and will end its run as one of the most beloved and critically applauded comedies of all-time. That same year, Andy Samberg also won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Comedy Series.

“I still remember the palpable excitement that night in 2018 when we announced ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ would be returning to its rightful home at NBC,” said Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We’ve always loved these characters and the way they make us laugh while also masterfully weaving in storylines that make us reflect as well. A big thank you to our wonderful partners – Dan Goor, the writers, producers and the incredibly talented cast and crew – for a comedy whose legacy will stand the test of time.”

“‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ has been one of the jewels in our comedy crown. It’s had an incredible run across not one but two networks, garnered widespread acclaim and captured the hearts of fans all over the world,” said Pearlena Igbokwe, Chairman, Universal Studio Group. “We extend our deepest gratitude to Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher and our entire wonderful ensemble, and our amazingly talented writers, producers and crew. And a special thanks to our brilliant showrunner Dan Goor, who could have rested on his laurels after season one but never took his foot off the hilarious gas pedal. ‘B99,’ it’s been NOICE!”

“I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve,” said executive producer Dan Goor. “When Mike Schur and I first pitched the pilot episode to Andy, he said, ‘I’m in, but I think the only way to tell this story is over exactly 153 episodes,’ which was crazy because that was exactly the number Mike and I had envisioned.

“I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for eight seasons. They are not only among the most talented people in the business, they are all good human beings who have become a family. But most of all, I feel lucky that we have had the best fans in the world. Fans who literally saved us from cancellation. Fans who fill us with joy. Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will be disappointed it’s ending so soon, but honestly, I’m grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape.”

In addition to the Golden Globe wins, co-star Andre Braugher has been nominated for four Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Capt. Raymond Holt, the esteemed leader of the 99th Precinct.

In its seventh and most recent season, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” reached 24 million viewers and averaged a 5.1 in 18-49 and 9.5 million viewers in total audience measurement. The series was NBC’s #2-rated program in digital and delivered 74 million official YouTube video views in the 2019-20 September-to-May season, for an increase of +66% compared with the previous season’s 44.7 million.

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” stars Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller.

Dan Goor, Mike Schur, David Miner, Luke Del Tredici and David Phillips executive produce.

The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, Fremulon, Dr. Goor Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment.

What do you think? Do you enjoy the Brooklyn Nine-Nine TV series? Do you think that the series should be ending with season eight? Are you sorry that there won’t be a ninth season on NBC?

‘What We Do In The Shadows’ Cast And Creators Talk Plans For Season 3 And Shooting In A Pandemic – Deadline Virtual Screening Series

What We Do In The Shadows , the wild and wacky FX comedy series about a bunch of vampire roommates has just been nominated for 5 Critcs Choice Awards including Best Comedy Series.  That is coming off a whopping 8 Emmy Nominations for season two of the show, one that is quickly becoming a must-see cult smash. I was joined by Executive Producer/Showrunner/Writer Paul Simms at a Deadline Virtual Screening Series  screening Thursday night of the finale episode of season two and a hilarious conversation following with him and  several castmates including  Kayvan Novak (Nandor); Matt Berry (Laszlo); Natasia Demetriou (Nadja); Harvey Guillen (Guillermo); and  Mark Proksch (Colin Robinson). When we talked they were all into week one of quarantining in advance of starting to shoot season three in Toronto.

Mark Proksch, Harvey Guillén, Kayvan Novak and Natasia Demetriou in 'What We Do in the Shadows'

“Feels like it’s been about a month so far, but I think it’s only been a week, but we have a solid plan (about making the show with Covid restrictions) , and it might slow down our shooting a little bit. Some people have said they we definitely prepared this season more than we usually do, knowing that things can’t go as fast and at such a break-neck speed, but I don’t know yet. I mean, I know the work will be good. It’s just a matter of how long it’ll take,” Simms said about the upcoming season of a show that looks like it can run forever.

It is based on the movie by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, and Clement created the TV version while Waititi has an EP credit. The small screen version though has taken on a life of its own and clearly is catching on with every season that goes by. Clement and Waititi however made it clear they did not want it to be about them as Simms told me when he signed on. “The said ‘we want to do it again, but we don’t want to be in it’, and I was like, well, that’s what made the movie so funny, but then, when we found this great cast, it became sort of a thing of its own. I mean, to use comic book talk, it’s the same universe, but a whole new cast of vampires, and within that, maintaining the same sensibility of the movie, and then, as the series has progressed, sort of branching out farther and sort of just accidentally becoming our own thing sort of,” he said.

There is eager anticipation for the next 10 episodes being shot now, but Simms didn’t tell me many details  when I tried to pry it out of him. “Well, without giving too much away, yes, obviously, season two ended with not only Guillermo slaying lots of important vampires, but the vampires he lives with, our regular characters now, knowing that he’s formerly a secret vampire slayer, and now they know about it, and yeah, we pick up very directly. We’ve had table reads of 9 of the 10 scripts now, so they know everything. So they could blow every secret if they wanted to, but I think they’ll just give you little hints and teases and tidbits,” he said.  I did ask if the pandemic itself is directly affecting the creative direction of the series.

“It hasn’t affected the style of the show. I mean, writing wise, we try to stay away from situations where we had big group scenes. I don’t think we would’ve done the finale scene that you just saw during the pandemic because it required so many other people, but we also went into this season very conscious of not wanting to let the pandemic narrow our ambitions and just, you know, keep it all in the house, ” he explained, adding they have some fantastic sets and set pieces planned going forward.

Each of the actors talked about some of their past favorite scenes to play, the trajectory of their characters, as well as just the pure fun of being in a hit comedy series that seems to be growing in popularity within the industry and with viewers by leaps and bounds.  To watch a portion of our conversation just click on the video link at the top of this post.

Republicans “Don’t Do Epiphany,” Bill Maher Warns As Trump Verdict Looms; Steve Schmidt Defends Lincoln Project Mission Amid Scandal

As Valentines Day approaches, “There’s nothing to get you revved up for romance like a solid week of bloody insurrection videos,” said Bill Maher Friday, as the former president’s impeachment trial may wrap tomorrow. (As if Valentines Day in lockdown isn’t already hard enough, said the host of HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher “Let me get that refrigerator door for you.”)
But, pre-Senate vote, he tamped down hopeful Dems and anti-Trump conservatives crossing their fingers for a conviction after so much distressing footage of the Capitol assault shown during the trial, reminding them that Republicans “don’t do epiphany.” A conviction is considered extremely unlikely, requiring 17 Republicans to vote with 50 Democrats. “They never come around,” Maher said. “This is the problem with Democrats. Always hoping. It’s the Charlie Brown with the football thing.”

His special guest Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) may be an exception. The former U.S. Air Force pilot recently launched the Country First PAC to move the Republican Party away from Trump’s influence and was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach the former POTUS after the Jan. 6 insurrection.

“We need a Republican party that isn’t crazy,” Kinzinger said, acknowledging that it’s a herculean task. “I may not succeed. I am at peace with trying. Someone has got to do something.”

“If I could go back now, I would vote for Joe Biden in a heartbeat,” he said.

In-studio guest Steve Schmidt, Lincoln Project founder and MSNBC contributor, defended the group’s efficacy in the campaign against Trump — he lost after all — and money spent as Maher grilled him about the group’s finances — which have come under fire. But the host declined to ask about a scandal brewing over the past month. Lincoln Project co-founder John Weaver is said to have sent unsolicited sexual emails to multiple young men, including a 14-year old. Schmidt, who has said he and the rest of the group’s leadership were not aware of the allegations, himself resigned from the board earlier Friday before Real Time aired.

Schmidt tweeted that he stepped to make room for a female board member as a first step to reforming the group’s leadership. “It’s time to step back from the front – to get healthy mentally, physically and spiritually. I look forward to being on Real Time with Bill Maher tonight on HBO and then to taking some much needed time off.”

Maher ended with New Rules’ jabs at pandemic inequality, the gig economy — and the nation’s obsession with families when the share of single Americans has doubled over the past 50 years. Mitt Romney’s possible near death experience at the Capitol last month didn’t excuse his paean just last week to a “renewed commitment to American families,” where he repeated the words America families a dozen times. “Shut the f-uck up! Do politicians ever get how insulting this is to such a large swath of people?” asked Maher. “You like kids and family? Great. You do you. But for millions of others, getting a good night’s sleep, not sharing the remote, or changing dirty diapers, never having to have a relationship talk or listen a passive-aggressive sigh. Priceless.”

Your Honor: No Season Two; Showtime TV Series Ending Next Sunday

Your Honor TV show on Showtime: season 2?

(Photo: Skip Bolen/SHOWTIME)

The end is near for Michael Desiato. Showtime has confirmed that Your Honor will indeed end next Sunday so, there won’t be a second season.

The Your Honor TV series stars Bryan Cranston, Hunter Doohan, Michael Stuhlbarg, Hope Davis, Carmen Ejogo, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Sofia Black-D’Elia, with guests Maura Tierney, Amy Landecker, Margo Martindale, Lorraine Toussaint, Chet Hanks, Lamar Johnson, and Lilli Kay. In the story, Michael Desiato (Cranston) is a highly-respected New Orleans judge whose personal and professional lives are turned upside down when his teenage son, Adam (Doohan), is involved in a hit-and-run. This leads to a high-stakes game of lies, deceit, and impossible choices for both of them. Meanwhile, Jimmy Baxter (Stuhlbarg) is the much-feared head of a crime family and the husband of Gina (Davis), who might be even more dangerous than her husband.

The first season of Your Honor averages a 0.08 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 573,000 viewers. The series has done well for Showtime and, though it got off to a slow start in the traditional ratings (the premiere was released online early), Your Honor has shown some significant growth over the course of the season.

The cable channel promoted Your Honor as a “limited series” which, these days, can indicate one or two things — that the story will be close-ended (ala a mini-series) or, that a season will have a limited number of episodes and could return for another season (ala How to Get Away with Murder and The Following). As Kaley Cuoco said, ahead of the launch of The Flight Attendant limited series on HBO Max, “Hey, everything’s a limited series. If you don’t get picked up, you go, ‘Oh, that was just a limited series.’ If you do get picked up, you’re like, ‘Yeah, f*** that. We’re doing season two!’”

In this case, it appears that Showtime intends to keep Your Honor as a one-and-done series. A recent press release notes that episode 10 is the end.

The ninth episode will air Sunday, February 7th at 10pm. The following Sunday, on February 14th at 10pm, the series concludes with the finale, directed by series star and executive producer Bryan Cranston.

The show’s story seems to be headed toward a definite series finale but, if that doesn’t happen, perhaps the creative team could be persuaded to return for another season.

What do you think? Have you enjoyed the Your Honor TV series? Would you watch a second season on Showtime or, should episode 10 be the end?

Superstore Season 6 Episode 9 Review: Conspiracy

Friendships were tested, trust was broken, and risks were taken as Superstore Season 6 Episode 9 took everything to the next level.

But all of these incidents did not occur without consequences — some being serious, while others had pleasant surprises.

Ultimately, “Conspiracy” was another hilarious episode with insightful ideas to take away from at the end.

Just as we suspected, Mateo and Cheyenne’s fight that began on Superstore Season 6 Episode 8 was far from finished. They start going at each other before the daily briefings are even over, while everyone else watches, amused by the drama.

But when it comes to resolving their conflict, there seems to be no clear solution in sight — until Mateo and Cheyenne team up to regain everyone else’s attention after they moved on to comfort Sayid during his heartbreak.

What could be more on the nose than Mateo and Cheyenne turning a petty grudge into fake drama just for the attention? If we could pick one instance that accurately describes their friendship, this would be it.

Because Mateo and Cheyenne live for drama, even if their fight was initially real, somewhere along the way, they grew tired of it, and they only kept up with the charade to create drama and be the centers of attention.

The funny thing is, they did not even mean to make up — they just bonded over planning a fake charade while going out for ice cream. But this storyline is so in character for both of them, and if they made up through an emotional heart-to-heart instead, it would not have been nearly as satisfied. If anything, it would have felt forced.

Ice cream and scheming with your best friend seems to be the perfect recipe for resolving a conflict where neither you nor your friend wants to concede. After all, why would Mateo and Cheyenne give up? They thrive over drama and gossip, and when they were at the center of it, they realized they love the attention, too.

We are glad they finally worked things out by bonding over what they love.

Dina: Now, we’ve noticed some of your masks are getting dingy; Cheyenne will be handing out new protective equipment.
Mateo: Based on her history, I wouldn’t trust Cheyenne with protection.
Cheyenne: I may be a teen mom, but at least I don’t look like someone put a Pixar character into a microwave.
Mateo: Well, you’d be DreamWorks, bitch.

Mateo and Cheyenne’s conflict ignited an argument in another tight-knit friendship, with Jonah and Garrett being the victims.

Of course, Jonah and Garrett’s argument is nowhere near the level of chaos that Mateo and Cheyenne had, but that does not mean an easy resolution. How could there be, when most of the time, it was really just Jonah being upset at Garrett?

Jonah casually brings up what he believes to be a pivotal fight in his friendship with Garrett. The only problem? Garrett does not remember it.

So, Jonah being who he is, spends the whole day portraying a cold and stiff demeanor, occasionally losing his temper when Garrett remembers other trivial things.

Garrett seems to be annoyed by Jonah’s behavior, but he remains unfazed for the most part. And honestly, it makes their argument less exciting. But this storyline did bring some funny moments, mainly when Jonah rants about why he cares about Garrett.

The reality is, Jonah has always been more confident in expressing his emotions than Garrett is. Most of the time, Garrett does not acknowledge his feelings. If he does, it is only to push them back down and do something that will hurt him in the long run, such as participating in Dina and Brian’s open relationship.

Therefore, Jonah is more likely to be openly upset about something, but it does not mean Garrett is immune to emotion. In fact, Garrett talks about when Jonah hurt his feelings, and Jonah does not remember it.

Garrett is always eager to move past bumps in their friendship because he does not want to make either of them feel worse than they already do. So, even if Jonah wants to communicate more openly about their feelings, Garrett certainly does not.

But that is not necessarily always a bad thing. Garrett does not want to hurt Jonah or their friendship. He would rather stay positive without having to add unnecessary drama.

True, this notion can lead to significant miscommunication and passive-aggressiveness, but so far, it seems to work for their friendship. Besides, Garrett has more pressing issues on his plate — namely his relationship with Dina and Brian.

Jonah: Well, why didn’t you say anything?
Garrett: Because why bring something up just to make your friend feel bad?

But the highlight of the episode had nothing to do with friendship conflicts. Instead, Glenn’s journey of adjusting to new Zephra policies ultimately led him to form a crazy conspiracy theory.

Before “Conspiracy,” Superstore had yet to take on the phenomenon. Sure, some may have been mentioned in passing, but this episode homes in on conspiracy theories — beginning from formation all the way to destruction.

Glenn’s storyline was the highlight of the episode because of how Superstore tackled the topic. Glenn was upset about several store policy changes, most notably, no longer being allowed to say, “have a heavenly day.”

Jonah and Garrett suggest searching for who to contact from corporate, but this search pushed Glenn into a rabbit hole. A bizarre one, that is, like a lot of conspiracy theories are. Glenn begins to believe that Zephra is using technology to implement mind control on Cloud 9 employees.

Dina tries to shut him down, but her tactics only push Glenn further into the idea. And it certainly does not help when Marcus and Sandra provide “evidence” to how Zephra is controlling them.

Superstore does a terrific job in demonstrating the appeal and the danger of conspiracy theories. They illustrate how a simple, seemingly ridiculous idea can turn into a group of hardcore believers, a cult, or a secret society.

Of course, Glenn’s mind control theory did not make it past him, Marcus, and Sandra, but in real life, some conspiracies definitely have.

Dina: Effective immediately, there will be no more talk about conspiracy theories.
Jonah: Well, there goes my afternoon.

The show also relays important information regarding conspiracies. If there is one thing we should walk away from this episode with, the only way to maintain harmful conspiracy theories is by allowing for reasonable discussion.

Dina’s attempts to shut down Glenn were futile. We recognize she was becoming impatient with Glenn’s refusal to acknowledge common sense, but if she had just held on for a little longer, she might have thoroughly debunked Glenn’s arguments.

But since she did not, Glenn pursued his mind control theory, which continued to fuel the fire. Thankfully, this fire was a mere store-wide power outage. Sometimes, conspiracy theories can lead to violence and other danger, as we have witnessed throughout history.

But Glenn’s storyline was not all about profound lessons that had to be learned. In fact, he provided non-stop humor the whole time, proving yet again that Superstore is truly at its best when covering real issues while adding an appropriate comedic effect.

We will undoubtedly miss this show when it comes to an end on March 25.

No more Gary. No more heaven; just more computers and demons!

Glenn
